Hey everyone 👋! I’m in a bit of a crossroads in my life and could really use some advice. I’m 37 years old, have a BA degree in Business, and currently pursuing my CompTIA certifications. I’ve been stuck in the restaurant industry for years and finally decided to make a change. I’m considering joining the Navy to kickstart a career in IT and tech, but I have a few concerns:
💭 Can I still join as an officer at my age with a college degree?
💭 Is it worth it to make this big leap for a career change?
💭 Am I being unrealistic in my expectations of making a higher income after gaining military experience?
I’d love to hear from veterans or anyone working in IT for some guidance and advice. And for others who might be in a similar situation, here are some possible solutions to consider:
🌟 Research different Navy programs that align with your goals in IT.
🌟 Network with current Navy officers or personnel to gain insights into their experiences.
🌟 Consider speaking with a military recruiter to get specific information regarding joining at your age and with your qualifications.
Let’s start a conversation and help each other out! Your input is greatly appreciated 🌟.
You should probably take this to a navy specific sub. I don’t know how competitive their OCS program is, and I’m sure you’d get more accurate info from a navy specific sub.
You could go enlisted and do four years active, then get out and work an IT job in the defense industrial base or federal government with your clearance + veteran status.
Dude don’t do that.
I have a better option for you than navy and putting too much unneeded stress on your aging body. join the National Guard(we called this the weekend warriors) and use your security clearance to become a top candidate for gov It jobs. You’ll never be in any real danger and don’t have to do anything crazy.
So IT military navy officer is pretty competitive you’re probably better enlisting in a reserve component in something that will get you a top secret clearance. If you still want to serve coast guard navy or Air Force are best options. For navy look into SWO (undesirable job but is a job) supply corp, and information professional (this is what you’ll want). Honestly I’d just say to do the reserve component and top secret clearance.
Talk to a recruiter. 100% not worth it as enlisted and maybe worth it if officer for your age. But honestly you’re probably too old for either.
I recommend Air force. Easier boot camp than Navy and they have more IT job opportunities.
Hey man, Feel you there, i got out of Kitchens and into the nice air conditioned… Call center hell. Lol Its not much but i can sit down for 8 hours and learn little bits of coding and keep practicing my skills and building a portfolio of projects … and learn what a portfolio or project is at my own pace!
Whatever you do, I wish you the best!
HEARD!
Plz no
Navy vet here who now works as a technical writer for a software company and does some IT kinds of things.
I say go for it. I was on submarines. It’s not a bad gig. I was 20 when I joined but I only did 4 years. I’m 39 now and sometimes wish I’d stayed in. I think I’d actually do better now mentally. I was a rebellious kid and didn’t like being told what to do. Turns out civilian life isn’t all that great either. It wasn’t physically hard.
If you can do it then I say go. If you had a wife or kids then I’d say no but as a single guy, what else do you have going on?
