Hey everyone! So, I found myself in a bit of a bind at work recently, and I’d love to hear your thoughts on it. Here’s what happened:
My manager totally locked all the entrance doors at my store when I finished my shift. I waited around for at least 20 minutes, trying to get him to come and unlock them with zero luck! I even pressed the intercom multiple times 🙄. By the time my parents arrived right at 10 PM, I started feeling really anxious because they were waiting for me, and they had to work the next day. I just wanted to get home without stressing them out!
Out of desperation, I made the impulsive decision to use the emergency exit. You know what happened next—an alarm went off! 😳🤦♂️ I really didn’t think that one through. All I wanted was to leave quickly without turning it into a big deal, especially not with my parents!
Here are a few pain points I encountered during this experience:
- 🔒 **Locked doors:** As a retail worker, it feels incredibly frustrating when you can’t leave work simply because management isn’t around. It affects our ability to get home on time!
- ⏳ **Waiting with no response:** When you have to rely on someone else (like a manager) who isn’t responsive, it adds unnecessary stress, especially for those of us who don’t drive yet.
- 🚨 **Emergency exit alarms:** Using emergency exits should be a last resort, but sometimes, they’re the only option. It’s stressful to think about the consequences! Will I face any legal issues for this? 🤔
As for solutions, maybe we could advocate for better policies—like having a designated employee to manage exits during closing hours? It seems like a reasonable expectation!
I’m a bit terrified of getting in trouble for using the emergency exit. Does anyone have advice or experiences to share? Have you ever been in this kind of situation at work? Let’s discuss! 👇
I don’t see a location here, so that may play into it. Will you have legal issues? Probably no. They could certainly fire you for it.
You won’t get into any legal trouble, they more than likely could fire you legally mattering on where you live. I’d suggest talking to management next time you’re at work to try and avoid this issue in the future.
You won’t be in any legal trouble but I am a bit confused, were you the only person in the building? If not, why didn’t you just go find the manager and ask him to open a door?
If it’s Big Orange or Big Blue, isn’t there the overnight freight crew that comes in that could let you out?
