When I go on LinkedIn I go straight to job boards. I don’t have to see the posts.
Don’t forget about building your “personal brand” and offering useless advice. If you haven’t made an animated graphic illustrating the process of blowing smoke up your own ass to sell a newsletter to brag about your virtual AI resume coach, can you call yourself a success?
LinkedIn is Grindr for sales and marketing people.
I don’t read any of that stuff on LinkedIn. I look at the job postings, maybe check to see what old friends/colleagues are up to, and connect with people I know. My current job, and the one before that, both came from LinkedIn job posts.
Because everyone needs to be active on social media where all of your bosses get notifications on when you post. You’re definitely going to be able to give unbiased opinions, and get them from the people that you’re talking to as well.
Honestly, there’s a value to keeping your personal life and work seperate. There’s no shame in doing your job and going home, and applying for jobs when you want to make a switch. You don’t need to live in a fishbowl your whole life.
Apart from the job section is completely useless, it could be gone in a couple of years. I think they are investing in their learning platform to get it more serious but I don’t know if it will stick. Anyway there is space for a professional network I think, like LinkedIn but with no coach/motivational/political things.
Linkedin is junk. Fucking turning into instagram
4 person view your profile ,like what I fucking do with it.
The stupid people with their “do you agree” post.
I just get fuckung depress using it.
Just use for job post ,thats also stupid.
I’ll tell you where LinkedIn is useful.
Building your reputation in your own company.
Meaning, you already work there, and add people in other departments. It gives you more exposure and people are quick to give you more consideration for promotion. It csn also backfire. Gotta be careful.
Some guy added me and his social media presence was a nightmare. He then applied to my department. Nope. Didn’t even consider an interview.
My connections from my last job is one giant circle jerk on LinkedIn lol
Then why scroll the news feed?
Use the job board. Update your profile once every 6 months. Don’t waste your mental energy being pissed off because you went scrolling through dumb posts on LinkedIn
It’s funny you say that because I just deleted my LinkedIn account. They asked for reason why and I stated other…….giant circle jerk!
LinkedIn is adult people’s high school. It is a popularity contest at this point.
Linkein is the weirdest Circlejerk where people all talk like AI vomiting out business jargon. TBH I think a good portion of LinkedIn posts are written by AI.
I list my profile on LinkedIn. I get hit up a lot by recruiters.
It’s the most toxic place, I’ve ever been to.
It’s 1000% the new Facebook for basic tools.
Thought leader is for sure the cringiest label and is like the “grown up influencer”.
The worst are the emoji filled bullet lists.
Like,
💡 here’s an idea, go fuck yourself
i dunno. I personally don’t use it but I do have an account. my wife credits linkedin with her getting a new job just 3 months after getting laid off.
she spent the first 1.5 months of unemployment applying to things on indeed getting auto rejected constantly with hardly any responses from real people.
after getting tired of that she updated her linkedin, set it to looking for work and started regularly being contacted by recruiters who set up interviews for her, which just last week lead to an actual offer for more money than she was making previously, which she accepted.
Purpose of linked in is for when I see someone is celebrating a birthday or got promoted at work or changed jobs, I can send a sincere pre recorded message to that person that says “Congrats Bob” and everyone on linked in can see my thoughtfulness
PS – got talked into LinkedIn during a course to keep up with fellow classmates whom I assumed I’d never see again. Now that I’m retired, it’s time to bail
It is like a socially vetted, web-based resume for normies.
For all the others, it’s a marketing and sales platform.
I also do not post but have been required to put my linked in link on most/all job apps in the last few years.
Linkedin is a total dumpster fire. It’s a bunch of corporate bootlickers and suck ups posting to make it seem like they give a fuck and salespeople wanting to connect so they can try to sell you something. I went on there a while ago and there were people from a building owner and managers group that I was forced to attend through my last job kissing each others asses and posting about how fun an event was. I used to drive an hour to those events, go in, get my name tag so if anyone was checking knew I was there and act like I was going to the bathroom and leave immediately. It made me feel sick.
But how else are you supposed to establish your Personal Brand^tm ?
It’s not just them! It’s all of them, indeed, ziprecuiter, etc.
I miss the days of having to go in person to find a job!!! You get passed up because you don’t have the exact perfect words on a piece of paper. Be human! Meet in person! You can’t tell someone’s personality over the internet!!!
It seems nobody has said this, but if you’re mostly just using Indeed and LinkedIn, you’re making it much harder to find a job than it often needs to be. The platforms are fine, but they have the most users than any other job boards… including internationally. That’s some fierce competition.
You don’t have to stop using them, but balance it out with small job boards specific to your field and area. Also, write an amazing cover letter and then simply reach out to interesting companies that aren’t hiring; you’ll have 0 competition.
In the nicest way possible, you’ve tried the LinkedIn and Indeed route, it hasn’t worked, so it’s probably time to try some new methods rather than continue doing the same thing. You have to troubleshoot your job search every week / every 15 applications.
Good luck!
just dont scroll thru ur feed 😭
Try Glassdoor too.
It’s not much better, but at least it’s not focused on self-serving career brags and you can see employee ratings and reviews to see how good or garbage the workplace might be.
“What’s the point of LinkedIn?”
Pro-Bourgeois Propaganda Factory
The people are as pretentious and fake on Linkedin as they are on all social media sites, but it’s still a tool and how I got my current job. Nothing to do but just sail the seas if you have no other options….
>Then there are the bragging types, constantly mentioning how great of a job they have, the company outings, perks, etc.
Linkedin is the fakest social media site. Even more so than Instagram
And LinkedIn is the main responsible for this change since the company started distributing Top Voice badges to so many members.
I’m 100% on board with you, OP. When I see “thought leader” or “change catalyst” on a LinkedIn profile, I throw up in my mouth. Can’t people just quietly do their jobs and STFU?
What’s weird is seeing people who got laid off still playing nice *with the people who fucking laid them off.*
Just don’t say anything.
