🤔 Having my daily existential crisis about pursuing work in IT. Do I dislike this work? Or do I just dislike studying for six hours a day? Will I like it better once I’m taking tickets and problem solving? Or will I feel worse if I’m not great at it right away? These are some of the questions that have been running through my mind lately.
I’ve already put in 2+ years of studying. I got a great internship and a foot in the door. Should I just commit, or go back to school for something else? Should I finish my degree and then just apply for a job in HR or admin? Should I switch to data science or accounting? Am I even smart enough to do any of this stuff?
I don’t know what the hell I’m doing. I wish I could just study plants all day long and have that be enough to pay for my kid’s medical bills and my rent.
Here are some insights and advice for those who are facing similar dilemmas:
## Is IT the Right Path for Me?
### Self-Reflect and Explore Your Interests
– Take some time to self-reflect and explore your interests. What aspects of IT do you enjoy and excel at? Are there any specific areas within IT that you are passionate about? Identifying your strengths and interests can help you determine if IT is the right career path for you.
### Seek Guidance and Mentorship
– It can be beneficial to seek guidance from mentors or professionals in the IT industry. They can provide valuable insights and advice based on their own experiences, which can help you gain a better understanding of the industry and whether it aligns with your career goals.
### Consider Job Shadowing or Internships
– Consider participating in job shadowing or internships to gain hands-on experience in the IT field. This can give you a clearer picture of what it’s like to work in IT and help you determine if it’s something you enjoy and are passionate about.
## Making Informed Decisions
### Evaluate Your Education and Career Options
– Evaluate your current education and career options. If you feel that IT may not be the right fit for you, consider exploring other fields that align with your interests and strengths, such as data science or accounting.
### Seek Professional Counseling
– If you’re feeling uncertain about your career path, seeking professional counseling or career coaching can be beneficial. A career counselor can help you assess your skills, interests, and values and provide guidance on making informed career decisions.
### Pursue Further Education or Training
– If you’re considering a career switch, explore the possibility of pursuing further education or training in a different field. This can equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge to transition into a new career path that better aligns with your interests and aspirations.
## Overcoming Self-Doubt
### Embrace a Growth Mindset
– Embrace a growth mindset and believe in your ability to learn and grow. It’s natural to experience self-doubt when faced with career decisions, but reminding yourself of your capabilities and potential can help you overcome these doubts.
### Seek Support from Peers and Mentors
– Surround yourself with a supportive network of peers and mentors who can encourage and guide you through your career journey. Having a strong support system can provide reassurance during times of uncertainty.
### Explore Alternative Career Paths
– Consider exploring alternative career paths within the IT industry or other fields. There are various roles and opportunities available that may better suit your interests and strengths, so take the time to research and explore your options.
In conclusion, facing a career crisis is a common experience that many individuals go through. It’s important to take the time to self-reflect, seek guidance, and explore your options in order to make informed career decisions. Whether it’s sticking with IT, pursuing a different field, or exploring alternative career paths, remember that it’s okay to feel uncertain and seek support as you navigate through your career journey. Remember to keep an open mind, stay resilient, and believe in your potential to achieve success in whatever path you choose.
