Absolutely out of line of them. They aren’t in your reporting chain and their opinion on your performance has no weight or it shouldn’t
Hi HR pro and former COO here.
If another exec, especially a brand new one, did this to one of my people my hair would be on fire and I’d certainly give him a dressing down.
Your boss is going to rip this guy a new asshole, or at the very least, warn the other execs that this guy is chastising staff that doesn’t report to him. This will do more to his reputation than yours.
The fact that your boss called you lickety split is all the comfort you need. I almost feel sorry for the new exec but would love to be a fly on the wall when the conversation happens between the newbie and your boss.
First of all, that exec sucks and shouldn’t have done that. It wasn’t their place. Good on you for telling your boss and good for the boss being rightfully pissed. The exec is likely having this attitude elsewhere in the business and hopefully won’t last long.
Second, I swear I have one of these “Murphy’s law” employees every few years. For whatever reason, either system error or user error, the weird thing happens to them. Or the one time I’m not hyper vigilant, I make an error on their thing. Of course they are never kind about it either. My last one was the former CEO turned M&A consultant. He wasn’t mean specifically but very direct. It was the worst!
My only advice is to have the new exec put his “disappointments” in writing because you know as soon as your boss talks to him about it the new exec will pull the whole “they misunderstood what I said” excuse
Also, since he complained about your help with recruiting and interviewing inform him that going forward you will be following company policy by withdrawing from any further involvement and he will be fully responsible for the hiring process from this point on
I’ve worked with people like this before and every single one of them eventually exhibited the traits of full blown narcissism, so this raises huge red flags for me
None of these issues have anything to do with how well you do your job and everything to do with this guy thinking he is the center of the universe and you are beneath him, with a strong indication that he has avoided his responsibilities by pushing them off on others and he doesn’t actually know how to do his job
