#CareerAdvice #EthicsInRecruiting #InternalRecruiter
Hey everyone! 👋
I’m in a bit of a pickle and could really use your input. So, here’s the deal: I used to work as an agency recruiter but went internal about a year ago, and I love my current job! 🎉 Recently, some of my old clients reached out, asking if I’d be interested in helping them out on a contract basis. These clients are not in direct competition with my current employer and are actually based in different locations.
While the idea is tempting, I’m struck by a thought: Could this lead to an ethical dilemma? 🤔 Even if I take on these contracts outside of my regular working hours, I feel like I might be stepping into a morally gray area, and I’m unsure about how to approach the topic with my current employer.
Here are a few things that weigh on my mind:
- Loyalty Concerns: Am I being disloyal to my current employer by potentially taking work from past clients?
- Perception of Integrity: How would my current team view this? Would it affect their trust in me?
- Work-Life Balance: Juggling additional contracts could lead to burnout, which wouldn’t be fair to either my current employer or my old clients.
To tackle these issues, I think it might help to have an open conversation with my employer about freelance opportunities. They might be more understanding than I expect! 🤷♀️
So, what would you all do in my shoes? Would you take on those contracts and risk the ethical gray area, or keep a strict boundary around your current role? Or do you think it’s best to chat with your employer before making a decision?
I’d love to hear your experiences or any tips you might have! Let’s get the conversation going! 💬
As long as it doesn’t encroach with a non compete I’d say go for it.
I propably wouldn’t do it during working hours with your current employer but if you’re worried about the “morallity” of it all, it’s just business att he end of the day.
I’m not seeing why this would be a conflict of interest? If this has no overlap with your current employment in terms of job duties, candidates, not working with competitors and does not infringe upon work hours, what is the unethical piece?
Why would earning income outside of your 9 to 5 be unethical?
As long as you do it strictly during off hours, don’t use any of your company’s resources (like your computer, sourcing tools, LinkedIn seat), and aren’t breaking any company policies I don’t see an issue
