2. **Increased demand:** As more people opt for online tax filing, the demand for tax software has soared. This increased demand may have contributed to the rise in prices.
3. **Additional features:** Turbo Tax offers a range of additional features, such as audit support and expert advice, which come at an extra cost. These features may have pushed up the overall price of filing with Turbo Tax.

yup, for the vast majority of people out there, I dont understand why they use turbotax or HRblock when FTUSA exists.
FreeTaxUSA is the way to go.
I used TT for 10+ years and then finally made the switch last year
There is no reason to use Turbo Tax. Use freetaxusa, it’s 100% free for federal and $15 for state.
+ 1 for FreeTaxUSA. It’s exactly like TurboTax but free. Only have to pay to efile for state taxes.
FreetaxUSA sounds like a scam website, every time I recommend it people give me a look. But it works and it’s maybe marginally more effort than TurboTax and a hell of a lot cheaper. Don’t contribute to the people looking to make taxes more complicated for their own profit
They know their days are numbered. The IRS has a direct file pilot program for simple tax returns in 8 states this year. Next year it will be all states and it will only get more robust.
I also used Free Tax USA but lately used Cashapp since it has free state tax return.
Mine was cheaper. I think it gets more expensive the closer you get to tax day. Usually mines $130 this year was under 100
you got robbed. I pay 80$ and get HAB the top tier TT on Amazon. I don;t know why more people insist on using TT online which charges for every form and charges extra to efile in NY when you can get the PC download and do up to 5 returns.
I usually use the desktop version, but won’t this year. Giving FTUSA a shot this year and will compare with the online TT side by side to see if I’m doing it right, since online TT is free to use before you submit to file.
Every year TT increases the standard price, then they do some BS and increase the prices of the add-ons, while also trying to make money off our data.
Go F yourself Intuit.
TurboTax is free to use up until you file. Use it to check your work on FreeTaxUSA which offers free federal returns
For an actual answer instead of everyone saying to use a different service, Turbotax prices increased March 1st as an incentive to get you to file early.
At that price, it’s cheaper to just get a CPA to do your taxes. Mine is a little more complicated and cost me $225 to have my accountant do it and they file everything and give it back to me in a neat, indexed package.
I’m confused – Newegg has TT Business [for $143](https://www.newegg.com/intuit-turbotax-business-2023-pc-download/p/N82E16832992147) right now with 5 free federal e filings.
I know they charge to e file state, but I always just print out the state return, sign it and mail it in for free. Are you saying you don’t have the option to print your return and mail it?
Get a fidelity account. Free turbos tax premier fed and state. Also get the cd when it’s on sale.
By all means, use FreeTaxUSA since it’s cheaper. But I don’t understand why people insist on using the online version. All the complains about TurboTax pertain to the online version. The desktop version is $65 for the premium version from CostCo if you get it in January. No upcharges. No filing fees. No pestering about upgrading. The price is the price. Also, you can do up to 5 filings with one code, so technically, you can split that cost among 5 friends.
I have my own reasons for preferring TurboTax, and it’s really not that expensive.
I paid a tax preparer $150 for my wife and I to do and file taxes for us. You are doing all the work, and paying that much!?!
man my actual tax person is almost 200$ and i dont have to do anything but hand them stuff… id get a tax person….
Killing off Mint was the last straw for me. It shows they are out of touch with their customers and how they are adding value.
I switched to FreeTaxUSA. I wish I had switched earlier. It was easier to file than any of the last 3 years with turbo tax.
There is no reason for intuit to exist. Overpriced products that deliver little value over the next best alternatives.
People continue to use TurboTax because that’s what they’ve always done. They’re super shitty and track returning customers and raise the price slightly each year. If you’re a new customer I’m sure it’s free.
I switched to [FreeTaxUSA.org](https://FreeTaxUSA.org) and it’s never cost me more than $15.99 to file my state.
If you buy the turbotax software download or CD version for about $40. Then you can use it to e-file federal for free. State costs $15 to e-file. Don’t do their online thing, do the software install option.
What’s Turbo Tax? J/k.. but seriously, I switched to Freetaxusa and won’t be going back.
I do my taxes by hand without any software. Started at age 18 with my first job. Home computers weren’t a thing back then. Continued doing my own for years until I started using taxact online. I used them for several years but also did it by hand to compare results. I stopped using software when the price became more than I wanted to pay. My situation isn’t overly complicated. I feel that I have a much better understanding of what affects taxes than I would have if I were only inputting data based on questions in the software. I read the “New this year” of the instruction booklet to keep up with changes. I look over Schedules 1-3 to see what may affect my taxes. I have always been a bit of a numbers nerd, so I don’t mind doing my own.
Edit- typos
I filled both TT and FTUSA. I missed the “state refund is not taxable option on FT USA and had to circle back to figure out why the numbers didn’t match. Outside of that, both returns matched nicely.
If you’re going to use TurboTax ALWAYS buy the software version. Never use the online version. Online they take advantage of your sunk cost of inputting everything and jack up the price at the end. The deluxe version is $55-60 with one state, federal e-file, and if you don’t want to pay to e-file the state you can print the forms out and mail them in.
I got an email from TurboTax a few days ago that said “last day to file with the lowest price of the season”.
I guess that implies they are raising their prices the closer you get to tax time?
I really despise TurboTax and I’m thinking this might be the year I switch.
[freetaxusa.com](https://freetaxusa.com) is basically turbotax but waaaay cheaper. My total was $15 this year.
What do people actually get for paying for TT?
Their pricing chased me away three years ago.
TurboTax is becoming stupidly greedy. I’ve used them for years and finally broke this year.
They wanted to charge me nearly $300 just to file. $60 per state to file and I had to file in 3 states this year.
Did freetaxusa and all 3 states plus federal cost me $45. Fuck intuit
Just want to say that if you are using TT as a tool to double check your numbers, go ahead and answer YES to everything it offers up front. Once you do, it won’t bug you over and over throughout the process because you’ve opted into everything. Obviously, you’re not actually giving them money so you can jump ship at the end.
