Oh, I’m that, but I’m also petty. 🌈
Have you ever encountered a situation where someone tries to belittle you or make you feel small because of who you are or how you look? It can be incredibly hurtful and anger-inducing, but sometimes, responding with grace and humor can be the best way to handle these situations. In this article, we’ll explore some personal experiences and examples of how to combat ignorance and negativity with a touch of sass and pride.
## Standing Tall in the Face of Adversity
So there we were, hubby and I, walking (in my case hobbling, cause my brain hates me) from the parking lot to the theater. There was a white jeep stopped in the street and some kind of commotion. We ignored and continued on. Around the front of the theater (parked in back), there was the jeep again, screaming and shouting, and mostly we ignored, cause moron teens.
But then!! I noticed they were talking about us, about our bald spots and such. Like… yeah, did you really think I wasn’t aware? Or cared? I mean, it’s not like we were trying to cover them up, so…
And then they said the word. Yes, that word, that means a bundle of wood.
## Responding with Poise and Wit
As an older gay man, I’ve faced discriminatory language and behavior before, and I have some responses in my back pocket for such situations:
1. **Stay Calm:** Take a deep breath and assess the situation before responding.
2. **Use Humor:** Sometimes, a witty comeback can defuse tension and show the ignorance of the other person.
3. **Educate:** If appropriate, use the opportunity to educate the individual on why their language is hurtful and unacceptable.
## Choosing Your Battles Wisely
In the case of the teens in the white jeep, they sped off before I could respond with my usual quippy comeback. But instead of letting their ignorance ruin my day, I took a proactive approach by memorizing their license plate and reporting them to the drunk driving hotline. Sometimes, the best revenge is ensuring the safety of others on the road.
## Personal Anecdotes: Dealing with Ignorance
1. **The “Mart of Walls” Encounter:**
A couple years ago, I was at the mart of walls, well known for their kind considerate reasonable clientele. I was trying to get to the handicapped parking spot, but some ignorant family was blocking the lane. After a confrontation, the father hurled a derogatory term at me. My response? A mix of sarcasm and confidence that left him speechless and embarrassed.
2. **The Theater Showdown:**
On another occasion, a group of teens made derogatory remarks about my appearance. Despite not being able to confront them directly, I found a way to hold them accountable for their behavior while maintaining my dignity.
## Empowering the LGBTQIA+ Community
Facing discrimination or ignorant remarks can be challenging, but it’s important to remember that you are strong, valid, and deserving of respect. Responding with grace and confidence in the face of adversity can not only shut down negativity but also empower others in the LGBTQIA+ community to stand tall and be proud of who they are.
So the next time someone tries to bring you down with hurtful words or actions, remember that you have the power to respond with grace, humor, and a touch of pettiness. Embrace your true self, be proud of who you are, and never let anyone dim your light. Love is love, and you are worthy of love and respect just as you are. Let’s spread awareness, promote positivity, and celebrate the diversity and strength of the LGBTQIA+ community together. 🌈💪🏳️🌈
