Hey everyone! 😄 I recently came across a fascinating Business Insider article discussing how some Gen Z college students are choosing to back out of internships if they receive a better job offer. It got me thinking about the dynamics of at-will employment.
One comment that stood out to me was this: "At-will employment goes both ways. They should offer me a pension if they want my loyalty." 😎
Let’s break this down a bit:
- At-will employment means that either the employer or the employee can end the relationship at any time, without cause.
- It’s a two-way street. 💼 If companies are expecting loyalty from their employees, shouldn’t they offer something substantial in return?
- A pension or similar benefits might feel like a way to foster loyalty and trust between employees and employers, especially in a world where job security is often uncertain.
So, what do you think? Should companies invest more in long-term benefits like pensions if they want to keep talent? 🤔
Feel free to share your thoughts, experiences, or even tips on navigating internships and job offers! Have you ever had to choose between loyalty to a company and a better opportunity? How did you handle it? Let’s chat!
This is a much healthier attitude to take with workplaces than what I was taught as a millennial. It took me years to come to the same conclusion!
Um, duh?
If you want loyalty, buy yourself a dog. I’m after money.
Yep. It does go both ways.
If an employer wants to retain good employees, they would actively pay them decently, give them good benefits and the like.
As far as a pension goes, it is a nice idea but unless it is properly funded, it can be a literal shit show. I would rather have that money go as a match into a 401k that follows me to whatever job I go to.
“”Laura, you’re great,” the company tells them. “But I just met a 4.0 student that had two more internships than you. I think I’m going to go with them. So I wish you well.” Can you imagine how furious you’d be…”

# DOING THIS
It’s why even as a gen X IDGAF. Loyalty goes both ways and it was trampled by corporations long ago, so I’ll do what’s best for me, fuck the company feelings.
Hell yes, Gen Z! God, they’re so much better than us.
Companies “track reneg rates per school.”
A load of horse crap. Students aren’t reneging on your company because they are from a certain school, they reneg on your company because your offer is just not good enough. Do better.
