In recent years, the debate over filming in gyms has become increasingly heated. Some argue that it is a violation of privacy and can be disruptive to other gym-goers, while others believe that it is a valuable tool for improving workout techniques and tracking progress. So, should gyms implement bans on filming? Let’s dig into this controversial issue and explore both sides of the argument.
## The Case for Banning Filming in Gyms
### Privacy Concerns
📸 One of the main arguments against filming in gyms is that it can violate the privacy of other gym members. People go to the gym to focus on their workouts and may not want to be inadvertently captured on camera by someone else.
### Distraction and Disruption
🏋️♂️ Filming workouts can be distracting to other gym-goers and disrupt the flow of the gym. It can also create safety hazards if people are not paying attention to their surroundings while filming.
### Legal Issues
🚫 There are also legal considerations to take into account when it comes to filming in gyms. In some jurisdictions, filming without consent is illegal and can result in lawsuits or criminal charges.
### Fair Use of Gym Equipment
💪 Many argue that filming in gyms can lead to the misuse of gym equipment or improper techniques being showcased, which can be misleading for others.
### Protecting Intellectual Property
🔒 Some fitness professionals may be concerned about having their unique workout routines or training methods filmed and then shared without their permission.
## The Case Against Banning Filming in Gyms
### Progress Tracking
📈 Filming workouts can be a valuable tool for tracking progress and improving technique. Being able to review footage of your workouts can help you identify areas for improvement and track your progress over time.
### Educational Purposes
📚 Filming workouts can also be a great way to educate yourself on proper form and technique. Watching yourself perform exercises can help you identify areas where you may be making mistakes and make corrections accordingly.
### Social Media Influence
📱 In today’s digital age, many people use social media to document their fitness journeys and share workout tips with others. Banning filming in gyms could limit the ability of fitness influencers to create content and engage with their followers.
### Accountability
🕵 Filming workouts can also provide an added layer of accountability. Knowing that you are being filmed may motivate you to push yourself harder and maintain proper form during your workouts.
### Community Building
🤝 Filming workouts can foster a sense of community among gym-goers. Sharing workout videos with others can inspire and motivate people to try new exercises and push themselves outside of their comfort zones.
## Conclusion
In conclusion, the debate over whether gyms should implement bans on filming is a complex one with valid arguments on both sides. While privacy concerns and potential distractions are valid reasons for banning filming in gyms, there are also benefits to allowing filming for progress tracking, education, and community building.
Ultimately, it may be up to individual gyms to establish clear guidelines for filming in order to strike a balance between respecting privacy and promoting a supportive and inclusive fitness environment. By fostering open communication and mutual respect among gym members, gyms can create a safe and welcoming space for everyone to focus on their fitness goals.

If they film other people on purpose, then yeah, they should.
many bodybuilders film themselves to evaluate their technique. Certainly most people dont have an issue with that. I believe filming others without their consent at a gym is a monumental issue and should be dealt with swiftly and severely.
For common regular exercise use gyms yes absolutely. There is no reason for most people tos etc up a camera and film themselves just for views, and most people in that setting certainly don’t want to be filmed sweating and grunting in exercise clothes.
Frankly I think it’s very rude to film in such public locations and post online. And very entitled.
Why cant the gyms implement this rule by them selves though? I dont see why there would be a need for a law controlling it. that way you can have gyms that ban it and gyms that allow it and you can pick which one you want to use
I think they should have designated areas where people can film and areas they can’t. I don’t care if someone films themselves as long as I’m not in the shot.
Yes, because gym footage is being used as outrage bait on social media. People are putting on bizarre exhibitionist social performances and calling it ‘content’ for their followers. It feeds into an ecosystem of manufactured outrage, because — *hey — did I just catch you looking at me?* ^((this will be a viral hit, the algorithms love this stuff))
Yes
As someone who doesn’t go to the gym I have opinions!!! Opinions that don’t matter at all so everyone just carry on.
This is the cell phone policy at the gym I belong to. It’s great.
– For the safety and privacy of everyone, cell phone use is strictly prohibited in all areas of the locker room. This includes texting, checking emails, sharing photos, etc.
– Photography, videotaping, filming, and audio recordings are strictly prohibited in all areas of the facility.
– Speakerphone and FaceTime are not permitted.
– Headphones are required when utilizing your device.
Edit: This gym is also 18+ so no minors or anything.
1000%. You don’t need to film your workout. Nobody cares. Unless you’re a competitive lifter and are going for 1RM or RPE 8+ and need to film for a form check, you’re just being an egotistical nightmare.
Yes
Yes. It is useful for people checking their form. HOWEVER as with anything there’s always the idiots that ruin things and ofc the clout chasers.
“Omg this pervert glanced in my direction twice while I was working out half naked he’s such a creep!!!”
The small minority ruin it for everyone else.
But yes BAN IT. It’s the only way to end the problems.
Should be banned completely. So irritating. Guy was filming today and was across multiple machines and was annoyed when people were using them. Gtfo! Go build your own gym if you want to pull that bs!
Yes. Nobody wants to see that. Nobody wants to be unknowingly filmed.
Ban tripods. And have specific hours people can film. Oh you want to film yourself doing a specific exercise to see your form? Cool come during these hours. Film yourself, then go back to non-filming hours.
yes if you’re just recording video for content like the three clowns in my gym yesterday IN CLOWN MASKS recording themselves on various gear
but no if you’re checking your form in the squat rack
Yes
Yes and no. If you’re filming to keep track of your form, it’s not a bad idea. Filming to post, nope.
Really they should make member sign a form they own the image rights to the gym and filming anything with the gym visible cannot be made for distribution purposes. Filming others without their explicit permission is against the rules.
most ‘sneaky’ recording devices dont use film so it really wouldnt help to ban it.
I did not care at first. But after a few episodes where people told me to move beceuse they are filming I want to kick every filming phone I see out the window.
I don’t think so because some people video to help those who don’t know what they are doing. Like they create videos online to give advice and demonstrate how to do things properly in the gym. Also some people film to see their progress or their posture to make sure they are doing it right.
I film set sometimes to check my form on certain exercises you can’t see well from the front. Because I have spine issues and a bad form can put me in bed for a week. So I occasionally just lean my phone on a bench or some such and take a 30 second video doing the exercise. I frame it close so no one else in in the shot, and no one but me has ever seen them.
I do not think filming for things like this should be banned.
It’s banned at my gym. Also pictures. If you want to do that, you have to ask for permission. It is absolutely banned to take photos of anyone else than yourself.
No.
Random posing in the mirror, filming other people should absolutely be banned.
BUT filming yourself is incredibly useful for checking your form with certain exercises, and would be a pain if it was banned.
I think so
No, if anything tripods and equipment should be banned, but we should be allowed to film our sets. I always film the first and last set, and for some lifts I film all of them. It helps my training, and it is IMO wrong to tell people like me that we cannot film just because other people cause trouble. It’s very annoying when people get worked up about people filming in the gym like being filmed sweaty is a war crime or something, no one cares about other people in the gym. You may as well be invisible, people filming their sets are filming them. It’s the same thing we tell people to get them in the gym “no one is paying attention to you and judging you,” we don’t need to limit people filming because a minority of people are sensitive about being filmed in public. In the locker room clearly no one should be filming though, this goes without saying.
No private person should be filmed in public without consent.
I don’t give a fuck record yourself all you want lol
Short answer: Yes
Long answer: Yes
I think a pass for filming would be good
Yeah, probably. There is some small utility to filming yourself at the gym, but it’s overwhelmingly a toxic social media behavior.
I think best case scenario would be having an isolated corridor specifically for filming, and ban it in the rest of the building.
This topic would be more fruitful if people who answered actually went to the gym.
To everyone saying filming should be banned: 1) how would you verify lifting form personally 2) how would you provide footage for an online coach and 3) how would you verify PRs?
I think no. There should be rules about it, but I think it’s okay for people to just film some stuff with consent.
