Is it detrimental to not receive a raise after a year at work in a small Texas company paid by the job? Should I start looking for a new job due to not getting a performance review or pay increase?

In most jobs, they don’t give you an automatic raise, you have to ask for it. They will also give you the smallest raise possible. I suggest looking up the rate of inflation last year and asking for AT LEAST that, or else you’re simply accepting a pay cut for your second year on the job.
If you want an actual pay raise, you need to ask for the rate of inflation +1-2% on top.
You should add more than 1-2% if you can measurably demonstrate value to the company – e.g. you helped bring in a big sale or were essential in rolling out a new product.
I would broach the topic with your superior, maybe they handle raises differently, or not at all. Never hurts to ask about it.
You said you are paid by the job, and not hourly. I deal with this in my industry. Are you paid a flat rate for your job? Are you contracted? That may be why. I have to explain this to staff why they didn’t get a raise even when min wage went up in october where i am (they were well above min with that rate for how long it takes) you could work 2 hours or 12 hours and still get paid the same.Â
Most people don’t get automatic raises. This is either covered by a title bump (promotion) or by a bonus raising your total comp.
If your salary increases are not tracking with the inflation rate, you’re losing money and if your company doesn’t give you a raise it means they don’t value you.
The reason most employers don’t give raises is people people don’t ask. You should request a raise and cite your performance. Remember everything is negotiable.
If they refuse, look for another job that will pay you what you’re worth.
Did you ask?
