🤔 Is a Degree worth it if I am already working in IT? 🎓
Hey everyone! So, here’s the scoop – I’m currently working in IT as a helpdesk tech, and I’m thinking about furthering my education by pursuing a computer science degree. I have some reservations though, so I’d love to get your thoughts on whether this is a logical step at this point in my career. Here’s a little more context:
– I already have some experience and certifications in networking/security.
– Many roles in security require a bachelor’s degree.
– I’m considering an online program at Thomas Rivers University in BC, Canada.
What do you think? Do you believe getting a degree while working in IT is worth it? Any advice or suggestions? Let’s discuss and help each other out! 🔍🚀
My suggested solution: Based on your career goals and the fact that you’re interested in exploring new areas like software development, pursuing a degree could be beneficial for your long-term growth and opportunities in the IT field. Online programs like the one at Thomas Rivers University offer flexibility for working professionals, making it a great option to consider.

yes do it
If you have the means, absolutely. Show employers that you are invested in continuing your education.
It’s absolutely worth it. In four years you will be 30 regardless. Would you rather be 30 with a degree or 30 without a degree? A bachelor’s degree will open up so many opportunities down the road, especially since you already have work experience.
Absolutely. My resume has been passed on just because I don’t have my bachelor’s.
It isn’t going to hurt anything, however in the end experience, soft skills, certs, and work experience will remain king.
I’m 48 and in my second class of a B.S. in Cybersecurity at WGU. I was asked to join the security at my job so I needed to learn more about the position. I could really careless about the degree, I just want the knowledge. After working a few months on the job as a SOC Analyst, I’m hooked.
What is the down side of more education in a field of interest? You can only learn so much on a helpdesk. Just do it.
I just turned 40 and I’m 2 years away. Certs have to be redone every 3 years but a bachelor’s is forever. They can’t take that away. You’ll get bored where you are and may want management someday if it’s between you and another candidates having the degree could be what differentiates you.
Depends. I’m finding it hard to get into management without one.
yes
I had a music degree and did tech support for Apple making around 30k. Went back for my master’s in IT. Got a job within a year as a sysadmin. Five years later, still at that same employer (government / non-profit) making $62k. I’m sure I could make more by job-hopping, but government benefits are great and my student loans will get forgiven in 5 years since my job is public service.
A degree is worth it. Certs would probably be great alongside a degree too; one day I’d like to pursue some CompTIA certs, even if it’s just to get a pay bump.
Absolutely. There will be career obstacles that will be more difficult than need be to overcome without a degree
