Hey everyone! ๐ So, I’m currently in a bit of a pickle and could really use some advice. I’ve been at my first company for a couple of years now, but recently got shifted to a live support role that I absolutely despise. Should I quit my job?
Here’s a quick rundown of my situation:
– Was forced to switch from a dev role to live support due to company layoffs
– Feeling burnt out and stressed from the demanding hours and responsibilities
– Getting interviews for dev roles but struggling to prepare due to current job demands
– Have enough savings to last for about a year without a job
– Concerned about how being unemployed might affect my chances with recruiters
I’m torn between sticking it out for financial security or taking the leap to focus on finding a more fulfilling role. What do you think I should do?
Possible Solutions:
– Consider taking a leave of absence to focus on interview prep
– Talk to your current manager about transitioning back to a dev role
– Seek guidance from a career coach or mentor for personalized advice
I’d love to hear your thoughts and any similar experiences you may have had! Let’s help each other out. ๐ #CareerCrossroads #JobChange #CommunitySupport
I would keep the job but put it as little effort as possible. Leetcode/prep on the clock as much as you can (but not on your work computer) and keep job searching. Better to have any job than to be unemployed
The best time to find a job is when you have one.
2 years should be enough for you to get another dev role. I was able to get my wife into her first dev role with no experience a few weeks ago. I also referred my coworker from my previous job and heโs on the second round of interviews. Go out there and snag one of those jobs.
i love your hours. I would kill for that but not the tech support.
Don’t quit till you have another job lined up. It’s damn near impossible to get one right now.
You really just need to put in the effort for leetcode and interview prep while you have a job. The tech industry is full of people looking so quitting something you already have is not a good idea. You will have to sacrifice time to get better. Itโs hard but implementing small habits can help. Itโs like those learning new skills in general on top of their regular jobs – habits make it happen.
Iโm a language learner (English learning Japanese) and I had the same problem – too exhausted after work. My therapist said: of course you would be. Try the mornings when your brain is the most fresh. Iโm not a morning person at all. This took forever to implement but I wake up a bit earlier a couple times a week (still canโt handle everyday) and study Japanese or review notes from my tutor. Then I get ready for work and go. Sometimes I get ready for work first if Iโm feeling really groggy and by the time I shower and eat Iโm awake enough. Then in the evenings I do a basic vocabulary review on an app but nothing involving a lot of brain power.
You can do it! Just takes discipline and hard work to get after what you really want ๐
You need a backup career. You have no real fallback right now, and trying to grind code after work isn’t going to be effective for you with that schedule. Get some inspiration from a Youtube channel called UpFlip. Plenty of stories about how people burning out at their full time job started side hustles, even passive ones, then turned that into their full time job.
OK we’ve officially come to madness when kids are considering becoming unemployed to focus on leetcode!! Your desirability to a prospective employer will take a massive hit once you no longer have a job. No amount of leetcode will make up for it.
Do it and learn the hard way! ๐
I feel you, brother but itโs almost always better for you to have an offer before you leave.
I got laid off a few years ago and not having a job really hurt my prospects. Some people didn’t realize I had been laid off, and when they asked why I was leaving, and I told them I was already unemployed, they immediately lost interest. You are damaged goods to them. They want someone who is already keeping a job. So ‘quiet quit’, do as little as possible and brush up your skills, and go get that new job. At least if they fire you, you can get unemployment, you can’t even do that if you quit!ย
