Hey everyone! 👋 Do I have a right to ask for a raise in this market? 🤔
I’m currently working as an IT Field Technician in California, making $19 an hour with a Computer Science degree and some programming experience under my belt. It’s been 2 months since I started this job, and while my boss mentioned the possibility of a salary after my 90-day mark, he’s not guaranteeing any raises.
Here’s the catch – my boss acknowledges the tough market and suggests I need more experience in networking for a higher pay. I’ve been feeling stuck and undervalued at $19 an hour, but I’m hesitant to ask for a raise considering the current market conditions and my limited experience.
But here’s what you guys think:
1. Should I ask for a raise despite the market conditions?
2. How can I prove my worth and negotiate for a higher salary?
3. Any advice on gaining more experience in networking to boost my value?
Let’s brainstorm and help each other out! 💡 Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences. Together, we can navigate through these challenges and strive for career growth! 🚀
So go get your CCNA? Personally, I wouldn’t give up, I’d put in the effort to improve now as you’ll be getting experience and the ceiling in IT roles is MUCH higher than flipping burgers. Just keep grinding and applying.
Stick it out for 6 months and start applying for other positions
Start applying to new places while your working at that place, either in the time that it takes you to find new gigs, a better one will come or possibly they will change their mind on the raise with you added time spent with the company but that’s a stretch with a company starting you at $19 a hour in California(I live here too in OC btw)…
I was in your shoes not so long ago at all, just started a new IT job today after being paid at my last job $18 an hour and the pay is much much higher and better benefits. Just don’t give it up just yet. You don’t get downtime working in fast food, your flipping burgers all day so theres no way to really apply and respond to recruiters easily. I left a low pay IT job for car sales until I found a better one and it was suuuper hard, no time to do anything except work, and I really didn’t have much energy at home to even educate myself or apply…If you have downtime at your current position, USE IT.
after two months? nah
Stick at it…. ultimately there’s a higher ceiling. 2 months tbh is too short and if you don’t have experience…you can try to jump ship after 6 months to something higher…the quickest and highest pay jumps I got was bouncing from places anywhere between 9-14 months.
If you come work for me, I will grant you the right to ask for raises once a week.
Your TLDR is spot on. 2 months? Your boss still can’t get good read on you as employee. Give it a few more months at the very least. You can ask him for feedback about your current performance. This will give you an idea of where to focus your efforts for the time ahead and get that raise you’re after.
You are rightless
I just did a interview and got a position paying $29 with no experience for it help desk i also have my bachelor cs. Your getting screwed over. Took me two years to find a position after graduating finally got some luck.
