I “stole” from a previous job for a pregnant coworker
🤰🍔
Many years ago, I (f28) was hired at my first job at a popular fast food chain restaurant. The work wasn’t glamorous, but the relationships I made with my coworkers made it all worthwhile. However, one particular manager, whom we’ll call Kathy, made the experience a bit more challenging. Kathy had a tendency to micromanage and express her disappointment to everyone, making it nearly impossible to enjoy work.
The Morning Routine with Kathy
———
Kathy usually worked the morning shifts, and I was one of the employees responsible for opening the store and preparing it for service for the day. However, our morning break was quite limited due to the store policy. We were not allowed to make food from the store to eat on our morning break, a rule that only seemed to apply to the morning shift. This was because the computer systems and cash registers weren’t active until just before opening, and we were required to ring in our food and pay the discounted employee price.
The Incident with Carrie
———
One morning, my coworker Carrie, a young single mother who was pregnant, was unable to bring food for her break. She had a strict pregnancy diet and couldn’t find anything to eat. When she asked Kathy for permission to make a sandwich, she was denied, even if she paid for it herself. I witnessed Kathy watching Carrie through the office window and heard her telling Carrie not to “steal” and make herself any food.
My Petty Revenge
———
Feeling bad for Carrie and exhausted by Kathy’s unfair rules, I decided to take matters into my own hands. When Kathy was distracted, I quickly made a sandwich and gave it to Carrie during our break. Kathy eventually found out and accused us of stealing food, but I felt good about helping someone in need.
The Aftermath
———
Despite Kathy’s accusations, I still had a job that day. Kathy eventually moved to another store, and the workplace became peaceful again. While I never “stole” again, the memory of Kathy running around frantically searching for proof was well worth it.
In conclusion, while the incident may have been petty, it was ultimately a kind gesture to help a pregnant coworker in need. Sometimes, a small act of defiance can make a big difference in someone’s day.
How did she know? Was she low key watching you the whole time? We need more Robin Hood’s in the world! You did good that day!
My favorite part is “…and Kathy died down in the office.” Lol.
What the ***?? I’ve been working in the catering industry and the non-official motto was “fed staff = happy staff = smooth operating”. No homard thermidor or poularde demi deuil on the sly, of course, but keeping the staff and a **pregnant woman** fed and fit to work can only be beneficial to the restaurant. Those penny wise and pound foolish Kathies are incredibly detrimental to businesses.
Good job helping your friend. But… you got your FIRST job at 28? How the hell does one make it to 28 without ever having a job?
I was only pregnant once. But, after a few months of pregnancy, if I was hungry, I would feel desperately hungry, like I MUST EAT NOW!!! So, bravo for what you did!
You are awesome. Thanks for looking out for your fellow humans.
WHERE WAS THE WRAPPER THO?
When you don’t have a heart for people that is what you get. She could have had a heart instead of raising her blood pressure “looking through trash” trying to catch a pregnant lady. Well done OP.
Imagine being that pressed over food that you don’t even own. She’s literally just an employee just like you guys except at a higher role. The ingredients aren’t funded out of her pocket. Wtf
Ignoring the needs of a pregnant employee – especially when EVERYONE ELSE with power agreed to support said employee when explained her needs – should’ve immediately been reported to H.R. Kathy could’ve endangered Carrie’s health by denying her food when she asked simply because Kathy was on a power trip.
I mean is it even cost effective for a manager to dig through trash to look for a $5 burger (if even that much)? Kathy is the petty one.
What an unhinged and pathetic person! Good for you.
I work a small concession myself. My staff and employees never pay for food or drink. The only people who pay are those that would report to management. We have a fantastic team who has each other’s backs! I love my team.
What a no-life loser. I hate people like that. Just eager to power trip. Glad she had you around to help her. 🙂
I love this! You are one of the good ones! And omg sorry y’all had to deal with that woman!
I was in Kathy’s position at a very similar fast food place and omg did I take care of my pregnant girlies (and everyone else but I was caregiving for 2 in there case). They always knew if they needed to snack, needed to have one of those emergency pees, just needed to sit in my office chair for a second they could ask. My answer was ALWAYS ok gimme like 2 min to finish putting in the drive thru times, typing the schedule… Whatever and I got you (and I’d be out there in 30 seconds, people over paperwork) and take over there post for a bit. Literally had one mama specifically request I go back and make “her special” for months cause I once tried to help her pin down what she was craving out of all our ingredients.
Is it just me or is this story very hard to read and follow?
