Try using the product you are working on and think of ways that it can be improved. Look through what current users are asking for and think of a way that you can provide something they want.
Seems like you just have a terrible manager and looking for a reason not to give bonuses and/or promotions and/or looking for any reason to PIP you. If you’re doing all the work you’re assigned to per sprint and do the work well, there is no reason he should be remotely unsatisfied. Do the 40 hours you’re paid for and stop. If things get worse, I’d look for a new job tbh.
I can’t speak to your performance and competency. But your boss saying your performance is not “up to mark given your salary” is unprofessional and gaslighting. He should instead be coaching with specific steps, setting you up with mentors, so you could develop those areas.
That said, it is important that you do reach out proactively to business stakeholders to just develop a relationship. Learn the business and you’ll gradually be more attuned to what tasks need to be done.
Quit asap but in a very professional way don’t burn the bridges. Been there more than I can remember. The only thing I ever regretted is working too hard and not quitting earlier.
This is kinda weird. Completing all tasks assigned, and on time? Ask for higher value tasks, and manager says go find them. Ha. I mean I could find high value tasks on my own, but I have been working on my project forever. I would never think the new guy could have that kind of insight immediately. I would chalk this up as a defective manager. Keep delivering on time, and forget that guy. In this case, it is the job (manager), not the employee.
It sounds like what your manager means is: be proactive in finding problems to solve. Do not just rely on someone giving you a task to complete.
What kind of industry are you in? How big is your company?
Personally, if I wasn’t good at spotting problems that need to be fixed (as you mentioned), I’d find a non-swe ally that is. For example, does the head of marketing have all these great ideas but can’t execute them. Partner up, they share the ideas they’ve love to build if they knew how. You build it for them. Everyone wins, and you become the talk around the office.
Mayybe start looking for a new job while working there
Similar to me started a job dev job 4 months ago things where going well then my manager for fired for political bs reasons
Now the last month has been miserable sold my stack of crypto and going travelling for 1 year. 9 years in this industry and I just need a break from the drama and politics and managers who have no clue
Gaslighting.
Be less agreeable, make it hard for your manager to harass you in this way.
You don’t have a future in that organization regardless, but at least you can set boundaries for your mental health and prepare your exit strategy.
Work is not always a meritocracy.
You deal with it by switching jobs.
Just imagine a customer bullshitting a shopkeeper like this. They would be shown the door. Dump this company and give them 1 star in reviews. DM me its name if you want to so that I will spread the word in my circle.
May I ask you how much you get paid?
