Hey fellow IT enthusiasts! 👋 So, I recently obtained my CompTIA A+ certification in April, but I’m finding it a bit challenging to land my first job in IT. 🖥️ Here’s a brief rundown of where I’m at and what I’ve been experiencing:
– Applied to over 60 IT support roles, struggling to find “entry level” positions
– Level 1 roles now require Network+ certification
– Had a couple of interviews, but no luck so far
I’m feeling a bit stuck and frustrated, and I’ve started applying to other non-IT roles out of necessity. Any advice or suggestions on how to navigate this situation? Here’s what I’m thinking of doing next:
– Keep applying to any jobs in the field, but not limiting myself to just IT
– Consider taking on a filler job while studying for Network+
– Network and connect with IT professionals in the Tampa area for potential opportunities
So, what do you think? Any tips, strategies, or success stories to share? Let’s help each other out on this journey to kickstart our careers in IT! 💪 #CareerAdvice #ITCareer #NetworkingInTech
You need to apply for more jobs. You’re going to get a lot of rejection letters but it’s literally a numbers game right now at entry level. You should be able to do many more than just 5 a day.
Also disregard what a company “requires”, job descriptions are just wish lists and companies make exceptions all the time.
Advice? You already recognized your two biggest problems:
1. I have no formal IT experience however
2. And I live in Tampa.
Keep working on Network+ and get Security+ after that. Network like crazy to try to find a way in and start looking at jobs in other cities you might want to live in like Atlanta, Austin, Raleigh, Nashville or Dallas. If you can’t do one of those cities at least expand your job search to the rest of Florida.
I was the same way, same experience as you. same A+ took me a year of spamming applications to get my tech support job at an office with a cool team. use LinkedIn and indeed
I found my job on LinkedIn. I was up against 140+ applicants. I got the job purely off my personality
he said “anyone can learn to do this, but not everyone can be good to talk to and have conversation”
Don’t waste time/money grinding certs, keep applying for entry level IT jobs to get experience. Its a catch-22 in IT right now, 75% want experience, 25% get off on certs, 100% question you why you don’t have both. You want money in your pocket and that’s all that matters. Anyone worth their salt knows a cert isn’t gonna teach you a damn thing in the real world, you learn from hands on in the field. That’s wet brained middle management thinking or a checkbox for HR.
