Put consultant in that gap. No one can really check if you worked for yourself.
You can be truthful or you can lie.
Tell them the truth about dealing with family matters that needed 100% of your time and are now mostly resolved and you can work full time again.
Or
Lie. Fill that gap as a consultant and just put a few tidbits in there from you career like it was an independent consulting gig.
Tell recruiters you tried your hand at starting your own business and found it after a while that it isn’t for you.
I’m in a similar boat. Have been saying the truth and been denied everywhere. So I might stop with the truth. Good luck!
Shame on them. I had six years gap before I got my first job here in the US. The first job was hard. But I explained that I could not work because of my visa status and I had been working on some skills to prepare to get back to the workforce like getting my CPA and honing my Excel skills. You know what, eventually there was a HM took the chance to hire me and I proved that I was one of his best hires. After that, the gap has never been a problem. So hang in there. I had no US degree or working experience and I made it. You absolutely can too. Just be patient. Good luck!!!
And you can start some volunteer or part time toom.
Lie to some extent- you were out for an illness- that is not good to share ever.
So home with kids that needed you or childcare issues or … a comfortable lie that suits you.
If you say consultant you would have to fabricate a backdated LLC and tax filings
I consult and have provided documents for background checks
They want articles of incorporation
1099’s tax filings etc.
Apply at nonprofits. At interviews explain you were taking care of sick family member, no need to say it’s you.
Gaps aren’t usually a big deal if you have a reasonable explanation, and you’ve done something during that time that shows you’re kept your skills sharp.
But most people say they were a consultant or did freelance work.
Older in IT, have you consider government job? They do not need the youngest coder , they actually need experienced people who can oversee project as most of these are outsource.
Do not lie on any federal application. It is a crime. Family matters is fine. It is quite normal in federal jobs. We have people take time off all the time.
