Hey everyone, I’ve got a bit of a dilemma and could really use some guidance. 🤔 After college, I ended up selling weed for about four years and was able to make around 70k. Now that I’m looking to switch industries and land a “real” job, I’m feeling a bit lost.
Here’s a quick rundown of my situation:
– Graduated with a bachelors degree in interdisciplinary studies 🎓
– Didn’t do any internships because I needed to make money selling
– Good at selling and marketing, but unsure how to translate that into a traditional job
I really want to switch to a more stable career, especially with a family on the way. Any advice on how to fill in the gaps on my resume and make myself marketable to employers? Any success stories or tips you can share would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance for any help. 😊
Why would you quit selling weed if your earning that kind of money. Its TAX free homie.
That’s a considerable gap in your resume, while not ethical I would consider stretching the truth. Find a way to build a resume around being self employed. Pick a niche you’re familiar with and relate your marketing and sales skills to it.
Ex.
Job title: Online Sales Specialist
Self Employed 2020-Present
Work experience:
• Identified early trends to generate new product leads
• Maintained balance sheets
• Resolved customer complaints
• Generated sales leads through advertisement
• Purchased and maintained inventory
• Etc.
You can really build yourself a decent resume if you look at your skills objectively. Selling weed can be broken down into a lot of different moving parts. Just keep in mind what you’re putting on your resume. In interviews you may be asked about your work. Have answers ready.
I’d recommend the security field if you can pass a 10 panel drug test. Administrative positions like special project/care coordinators are entry level and constantly need to be filled (50-60k starting). Alternatively armed/unarmed guard positions are also a great option if you have the ability to pay for some courses/certifications. (Pay varies greatly) While security doesn’t play into your sales/marketing background it is a nice bullet to help rebuild your resume.
there is no more valuable skill than selling
You should put that on your resume. Independent CPG (consumer packaged good) sales. Break everything you did down, using chat gpt, and transfer all those skills over. How much did the business grow YoY? Did you do anything to grow sales? How was building relationships? Were you growing your own, or white labeling for someone else? Emphasize the work you did online for marketing and business development. Use chat gpt to work your resume to better align with the role you’re applying for. If they ask for in depth specifics of your clients, you were on an NDA, you can’t talk too specifically.
Why not look for a Business Development Role or an analyst role, that’s the gateway into sales in the corporate world. That’s long term good money and worth the effort up front.
70k over 4 years? $17,500 a year? That’s not worth the hassle bro. Or do you mean 70k a year. That is more of a conversation.
Do you know how to open a locked bank vault? Willing to learn?
Selling weed is not a job no skill required except being lucky enough not to get busted. It doesn’t make you a salesman. Get a trade
If you’ve already been selling, why would you want to work for someone else?
If you’ve still got a decent chunk of the 70k, why not open your own store?
I’m sure you’ve got the salesmanship down at this point. It’s now just location and sourcing proper growers. I mean… what do you have to lose, you’d be selling legally.
(That’s if it’s legal in your area.)
If you can grow, maybe look for a job in the weed industry. Legal weed industry is usually pretty open to people with experience, legal or not.
I’m also 25 years old everyone has helped so much I have no parental guidance and these comments have almost made me tear and get emotional to the wavering support and advice out there! Thank you all truly.
Ummm should’ve kept selling dude
You can probably do any inventory related positions, something like procurement specialist too. Logistics type work , shit try to be a Amazon warehouse manager. Cake gig. Just rewrite the job descriptions in your own words but apply it to selling weed and say self employed if anyone ever helped you they were employees you managed
Have you considered entrepreneurship – in a field you’re already familiar with – and likely have an established network of sorts, which is legalizing and expanding at a rapid rate?
Start a biz. You already have some experience lol
Just lie on your resume at this point
You could open a dispensary. Or you could frame your selling experience as an actual work experience (and it really is).
Stick to weed, that can also work out or get placed in a cannabis store or dispensary, selling to people legally
Move into adderall now. A better play with weed legal in most places.
Just lie on your resume like everyone else lol jk jk
Sell cars.
Are dispensaries legal where you are? Job experience…
I sold for 10 and made $3MM. Then house got raided. Now I have a decent job $200k but most important freedom!
You just go get one. I sold weed for 15 years
You Can also pay for a professional resume.
Lmk if you need a referral.
I paid 300 for my brother when he got layed off and he got a better paying job soon after thanks to a solid resume
You will never be happy stopping now and working for someone else. It’d be like going from freedom to slavery, mentally speaking.
What gap? You ran a sole proprietorship.
Yes. Marketing pivot. Same strategy
FBI has entered the chat
Sell coffee or candy
Sell cars and work towards selling RVs
