Hey everyone, I need some advice on how to handle a tricky situation at work. 🤔
I recently experienced a heartbreaking loss in my family and needed a day off to process and grieve. When I asked my coworker, who is also a manager, to cover my shift, she responded in a hostile manner. 😞
Here are some of the key points:
– My grandmother was put on hospice at the beginning of the month.
– I asked my coworker to cover my shift to grieve after my grandmother passed away.
– She responded in a way that made me question whether I should escalate the situation to HR.
Do you think I should go to HR about this? How should I handle a hostile coworker in a professional setting? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Possible Solution:
– Address the issue directly with your coworker in a calm and respectful manner.
– Document the conversation and any future interactions for reference.
– If the behavior continues, consider bringing the issue to HR for further assistance.

Just send it to HR
And, this is why management needs to deal with scheduling issues.
This is what work does to people by the way.
I would’ve blocked her after the first bit.
I had exactly the same kind of situation when my younger sibling was dying. Wanted to go say my goodbyes while they were still conscious and was made to feel guilty. When they moved to a hospice a few days later I was receiving messages and phone calls( phone was on silent and I saw them later). Disgusting behaviour and I expected more from managers in their 60s.
I’m sorry about your grandmother x
That would be an immediate HR move for me. I’m dealing with a family member dying and this is how you treat me?
This is exactly why management wants workers to solve the shift issues on their own. To pit one against the other. To get them at each other’s throats so that they are to busy to realize who’s really fucking them with understaffing.
Tell management
You usually only get to have two grandmothers. [Besides HR, if you decide to do that], immediately inform your boss that you will not be in, period.
Getting coverage for your own time off of work is not your job.
Family first. [And no, work is not ‘family.’]
It’s definitely not okay to treat people that way. That’s ridiculous. I’m not sure what, if anything HR would do about it.
Deleted due to weird misplacement glitch.
Honestly id come in work my shift and never ask for a coverage again and just quit asap
It’s so easy to say fuck you … and I get not everyone is in a position where they can comfortably say that. But nah fuck that guy
Go to HR. Please. Not cool especially in a situation where your fucking grandmother is dead. Jfc
Say it with me now: hostile. Work. Environment.
To be that hostile and then when the person says they’ll do their own shift, why would you still act like a POS? It’s just such a symptom of today’s world man. People assume the absolute worst of everyone in every situation. We are all so tired and stressed and broken down.
Wow….
Lpt…
Get a Google voice number and provide that to all work contracts; put all the contact numbers in a group and DND them.
All coverage goes thru mngmnt
If they so find coverage then refuse.
“- name- created a hostile work environment the last time I needed coverage and I refuse to subject myself to his abusive and aggressive communication style”
This is a co-worker? My response is something that will get me booted.
That’s the #1 way to make me instantly unavailable for any of that persons PTO, unplanned TO, need to go to the dentist for 2 hours next week? Sucks that I can’t cover it. Treat me like a bitch and I’ll do it right back. They better pray their family doesn’t pass, I’d dish it right back to them, on every single occasion from that point forward. Make this the one incident they’ll regret for the rest of their time working there
I’ve been binging south park lately. I couldn’t help but read it in Cartman’s voice.
Why did you engage with this behavior. I would of left them on read and went to HR
Go to HR. Your coworker needs anger management and needs their narcissistic personality disorder looked at.
What a fucking POS
Fuck this person. Inconsiderate fuck.
Condolences for your family.
i wasnt excpecting this to blow up i just wanted a second say on it but thank you guys for all the support!

Respectfully I’d beat the fuck out of them
Your grandma just died and your coworker swore at you when you asked them to cover for you. Yes, you are justified in going to HR.
You blinked, your coworker won. Just say no.
Oh nah, that’s on sight bro. Fuck HR
She’s so childish.
So what did we get in the will?
Tell Greg to fuck off and go to HR
Your coworker seems like a vindictive BITCH.
Fuck them. Thats disrespectful AF. Deserves a SLAP 👋. Or 6
I mean pandering to them is exactly why they do it.
They threw a tantrum and got what they wanted.
Dude should be angry at the system, not at you. Shame.
This is why management needs to find replacements and coverage. They pit employees against one another!
Alex is not going to be happy his name has been dragged into this!
Report the hell out of them.
First and foremost, I’m sorry for your loss. I know that knowing that it’s coming doesn’t make it easier.
Also, I just want to say that your character really showed in this exchange. I am honestly not sure how you kept your cool in the face of that bullshit on top of the grief.
Poor Alix
Alex can eat a dick
You’re wayyyyyyyyyyy too nice. HR NOW.
