Yup places like government jobs that used to take you if you had a pulse and a CS degree with one of those sometimes being optional are now getting a thousand applicants. I was talking to a recruiter for a government place and he said oh sorry we are only hiring people with experience right now. Then why did you come to a university career fair????

Tons of people are spam applying to any position that is hiring doesnt mean they are qualified. Doubt most of the people applying even know what cobol is.
The important question is how many are even semi qualified

If you can get Section A, you can apply to jobs not open to the public. Its not that hard. Between my depression, anxiety, diabetes, etc, I qualify in a dozen different ways.

The fact is, software developers that were laid off from their 200K+ MAANG jobs are all learning the harsh reality that their next jobs won’t pay as much or have the same level of cute office perks.

Hate to say it but if you don’t into a category it’s going to be tough, such as: years of experience or coming from top tier university.
How many were suitable?
Hope you find some good talent to work with. Certain parts of the government can be tough, and at times extremely toxic.
I think this is two fold. The market isn’t great right now so people are spreading wider, but it’s also paraded that government work is slow, laid back, and layoff/recession proof. Lots of people got burned in tech and said fuck that and are looking elsewhere.

I’ve been trying to get my foot in the door at Defense contractors, state gov, or federal government since graduating in ’19.
I think the biggest blocker for me is lack of clearance or military experience. Now, it’s the market.

I always see people on here say to apply to government jobs but which departments are people talking about?
Like this for lawyer jobs. Friend of mine works with DOJ, and says any posting they put up for a lawyer job gets mobbed, thousands of applicants, a lot with serious credentials. Turns out, some people don’t like having to bill 2000 hours a year and want an actual life outside work. So I could see a mix of applicants without a job, and those that just want to work their 40 and leave.
Is this local gov or fed? Mind sharing what dept? I’ve been applying for a few gov jobs myself lately and I’m wondering what my chances are.

How many are actually valid application?
Looking a bit from the other side, about 85% or so from my experience is total junk application.
People with no education or any CS background and such, it’s 100% bot spam.
Out of those 15% maybe a handful actually fit the role.
Like why does someone with a PhD, 36 YOE apply for a fresh grad job? I’ve seen countless of those.
To the bin they go.
So out of 100 of applications there’s maybe 5 that are genuine and valid.
That’s for a small company with no name outside the job posting. I’m sure a large company gets 1000s of that crap daily.
It’s why there’s no surprise when they need to filter out so many of them using a software.
For COBOL? Lol, don’t think so
Why would you post something like this? It just gives people looking for a job a heart attack.
And the real problem right now is all these middlemen coming in with their companies trying to to say they found you first so they can take a cut of your contract. I’m getting like 10-20 calls a day sometimes for the same job. It’s insane.
