Hey everyone! 😊 I’m reaching out because I recently went through a pretty tough situation at work, and I could really use some advice.
So here’s the deal:
- I was working as an assistant director in a marijuana cultivation facility.
- My boss, who also happened to be a close friend, got fired unexpectedly.
- Things got messy during his dismissal, and before I knew it, management decided to let me go too.
Now I’m feeling pretty upset about the whole thing. It just seems so unfair that I lost my job due to “guilt by association.” 😞 It feels like I’m being punished for being friends with someone.
A few things are really bothering me:
- Unethical Behavior: Is it right for a company to fire someone just because they’re friends with another employee who got let go? That seems a bit off to me.
- Legality: Is there anything legally wrong about this? Can employers really just cut ties like that without good reason?
- Moral Dilemma: It feels morally wrong to let someone go under those circumstances. Has anyone else been in a similar situation?
I’d love to hear your thoughts! 🤔 Have you ever been in a situation where you felt you were treated unfairly at work? What actions did you take? Any tips or advice on how to handle this?

Not illegal. You are employed “at will” so they can fire you for any (non-illegal) reason they want. Because you were hired by the buddy is not an illegal reason.
Were we involved in it going bad? It seems this post is lacking a lot of the detail required to provide a meaningful answer.
Sorry, at will employment is ruthless.
Tough situation but I doubt you have a legal recourse. Better to move on
It doesn’t hurt to seek some sort of legal action. Find a lawyer that will file a letter to the company for a % of a payout. Most of the time the company will want to settle if a reasonable demand than waste time and money fighting.

I guarantee if you call them back and tell them you are beginning the process of gender transition that they not only will rehire you, but likely give you a raise.
Nobody wants to deal with trans issues. I’ve done this many times. All you have to say is it’s a “personal journey” and decision and that you appreciate their privacy. They cannot dismiss you for your gender identity. You never have to update them at all, and if anybody says anything negative it is the fastest successful lawsuit (or $ettlement) you will ever have. Just the threat of media attention will get you at least a 20% raise. You likely wouldn’t have to work for awhile after it.
You were RIF’d. He was terminated.
