You can certainly report this to the United States Postal Inspection Service, but I wouldn’t expect much of anything to come of it. You can’t force the police to take action.
Process servers are not legally allowed to rifle through the mailbox. Its a crime if they open the mailbox. Report it to the Postal Inspector and ask the cops for the individual’s information they provided.
Contact your local post office and speak with the post master. They will help
100% illegal and the fact the cops are covering for it makes it that much worse. Mention it to USPS because no one including friends are supposed to use your mailbox. That means no search warrant unless specified for a specific piece of mail, can allow someone access to it.
USPS Postal Inspectors are legit. They are federal agents and they take this stuff seriously. It is illegal for someone to go through your mail. In fact, it’s not even legal for someone to leave something in your mailbox. The Postal Inspectors showed up at my doorstep once investigating crime that happened on our street. Ironically, they had the wrong address, but they had badges and guns and were not fooling around.
2 things:
1. file a complaint with the Post Office, particularly the Post Master…. how can they be so sure that nothing was taken, how? There is absolutely no way they could possibly know that, that they didnt remove something…… the Post office has their own police force and it was illegal for him to just go through your mail, it was even more illegal to remove it from the box and leave with it.
2. Go to usps.com and sign up for mail delivery notifications, I get an email from the postal service every day, it shows a scanned picture of all (well most) mail being delivered by the postal service that day. It also lists packages they are planning on delivering that day as well…..
3. File a formal written complaint with that police department. They shouldn’t have done nothing…. this will potentially escalate it a little further, it will get superiors toy all involved at reviewing the situation.
Postal Inspectors are very legitimate and they investigate federal crimes like child porn, drugs, explosives, identity theft and mail fraud/scams. There is also a mail police but they investigate heists through the mail. Call back the police and get a report number and see if you can get the police report or cad report regarding your call.
