Was my interaction with the HR and Director justified after being rejected? What are your thoughts on my formal complaint about the recruitment process, including travel expenses, lack of reimbursement, and in-person interviews? #RecruitmentComplaint #TravelExpenses #InterviewExperience #FormalComplaint #RecruitmentProcess #FeedbackRequest #HumanResources #DirectorFeedback #UnfairRecruitment #LegalIssues #JobInterviews #RecruitmentDelays #CandidateExperience #CorporateEthics #ProfessionalFeedback.
I think you should have billed them for your flights/transportation, meals and time.
What do you expect as the outcome? Why would you pay to travel vs telling them to organize it?
I think this can be considered an expensive life lesson. From now on, express interest and that you’re happy to participate in an in-person interview but they must pay for your travel. Maybe even tell them (in neutral language) that you’ve had prior experience traveling on your own dime and got burned. Otherwise, you’re open to zoom.
Never pay for your own flight, that’s insane.
Broadly, I don’t see this resolving anything tbh. I would ask for reimbursements if that was promised and make the letter about that – not justice or fairness or the hiring process or whatever.
You also bold random words, you bold key points in an e-mail so someone skimming gets the idea. I get “online” and “criminal law”, which makes you seem deranged, nothing about “reimbursement” and “undue hardship”. Don’t mention you think you should be selected either, it sounds entitled, assume someone more qualified got the role. Don’t ask for feedback. Make it about getting reimbursed. That you might get. You’re not getting the job, any meaningful feedback, or your feelings unhurt.
If you have a promise for reimbursements, get them. Outline the promise/contract/paperwork, with quotes of original e-mail. Give the timeline and mention your financial state.
If this is some kind of academic position you may not want to send it, it could get you blackballed from the other unis in the area.
Have a nice week.
I didn’t read everything and I’ll not. Man, you paid for international travel because of a company! Big mistake. We just pay for local transportation. Even if it’s another city, this must be negotiated upfront and paid upfront. We should NEVER create expectations.
Lesson learned!
Not giving feedback is typical. When I was an editor, we’d automatically tell authors we couldn’t give them feedback as to their rejection even if we knew why and it wasn’t protected. Hell, they were independent contractors so there were even less protections. When you give feedback, it can be argued. They aren’t looking for arguments. Focus on the reimbursement IF IT WAS OFFERED. If it was never offered, there’s no point. As it stands, if I received this email from an author I rejected it would go straight to the closed email folder or get my usual “we can’t provide feedback, good luck in the future, etc.” response then be closed.
This has to be a troll job
You are barking up the wrong tree.
You should write a factually accurate review of the recruitment process online.
“I was asked to pay my own travel expense for an in person interview, which I did given my assumptions about the role.
Unfortunately I learned too late that the firm suffers from disorganization, and ended up speaking with someone unrelated to the role for which I was interviewing. This meant it was difficult to discuss the specifics of the area in which I would be working because the interviewer didn’t appear to have more than a basic understanding of fundamentals.
It was an expensive lesson to learn, but It looks like I dodged a bullet.
Never follow lost people. “
How do you know there were only two candidates?
Don’t send this. If you do, run it through a grammar check (“albeit”).
I avoided something similar almost 20 years ago. When I was told that I would have to pay for my own flight, hotel and other expenses I told them thank you but no thanks. From what I learned from others in the industry and in that area, they were still trying to fill the position 18 months later.
This comes across as deranged and frankly it’ll just get deleted.
Was there an agreement to pay for travel? Or did they assume you were local.
They made the right decision. You’re a huge liability.
Iirc if the company invites you for a interview they have to pay your travel expenses by law (of course not a 5 star hotel but regular 3 star hotels + usual travel costs)
They would have to pay for me to go there. Not paying? I look elsewhere.
I know this email gonna sound more fire in German lol. Dude I wouldn’t send this much. One paragraph asking for reimbursement. Nothing of the process. It’s best to save face. Fuck letting these jackoffs have one on you. Annoying I know but you never know who might come across your cv in the future.
