Hey everyone, I recently found myself in a role in commercial banking after graduation and I’m not exactly thrilled about it. I’m hoping to transition into strategy, risk management, or a corporate financial analyst position in the future.
So, the burning question is – how likely is it for me to make this career switch after spending a year or two in commercial banking? 🤔
Here are some possible solutions that may help increase your chances of transitioning into your desired roles:
– Networking within your company and industry to explore internal opportunities
– Pursuing additional certifications or courses relevant to your desired roles
– Leveraging your current role to gain valuable skills and experience that can be transferable

Commercial banking blows all of those jobs out of the water.
I currently work in risk for a big bank and it’s so boring. Currently trying to transition into commercial banking.
Similar background to you. Take full advantage of that development program. Really work on your modelling and underwriting skills. Once you start working on interesting deals the job can be quite exciting. Learn everything you possibly can about the debt financing side and you will be able to leverage it into something bigger like going to a private credit fund (what I did), corporate banking, or DCM.
Yeah like the other commenter says, commercial banking can open up pathways to credit focused high finance jobs like private credit, IB DCM, IB leveraged finance, credit focused HFs, credit focused AM firms, CLO managers, etc
