#TechJobMarketAUS #BusinessAnalyst #MelbourneTechScene
Hey everyone! π So I’ve been soaking up the rainy UK weather for the past decade, but I’m finally making my way back to sunny Melbourne in a couple of months. π Now, I’ve been a Business Analyst in the healthtech industry for 5 years, but I’m a bit out of the loop when it comes to the Aussie job market.
I’ve been earning Β£53k ($100k) over here, which has been pretty comfy up north, but I’ve heard that might not stretch as far in Melbourne these days. π¬ So, I’m curious – what’s the deal with Business Analyst roles in the land down under?
Here are a few questions on my mind:
– What’s the job market like for Business Analysts in Melbourne?
– Are companies more inclined to hire contractors or are there plenty of full-time roles available?
– Is the competition fierce right now?
I know it’s a bit of a niche question, but any insights or personal experiences would be super helpful as I start gearing up for the job hunt. Thanks in advance! π
Plenty of people saying that tech is in a hiring slump⦠yet all I see on LinkedIn is people landing jobs. Plenty of work for people that do more than just dropping their resume in.
Find a company you want to work for, apply normally, but also do some example work and send that through to the hiring manager with a Loom explaining how it will help them. This works wonders.
Just search on linkedin and seek.
With 10+ yoe, you should be senior BA, around $150k.
It’s not about the income. Exactly like you say it’s how far that income gets you – unfortunately in Melbourne/Syd the cost of living is insane…
I moved back about 2yrs ago from UKβ¦ just be prepared that the number of roles available in Aus vs UK is tiny. Leverage your contacts / networks as soon as you arrive back.Β
Experienced BAs are in need. Youβll be fine
If you’re interested in pivoting into sales there will be plenty of options. Many tech companies have a satellite presence here, but are sales-led and may not have BA roles.
As a BA you might have more luck in other sectors like finance, telco or health if you’re open minded.
You should be fine finding a role as a BA in comparison to an engineering role
Full of south Asians
Helps if you speak Punjabi
Lots of contract BAs and PMs not getting renewed in State government in NSW. Market is pretty miserable here. Hope Vic is better for OP.
BA jobs are full of Indias with low quality
It will be a shock for you probably – Melbourne is expensive. That kind of cash wonβt go as far in Melbourne. BA roles are around and they probably pay better here. Probably you will be fine once you land something. I hazard to state that it is the more staid, traditional and conservative orgs that still use BAs. Many younger or more technologically oriented organisations have had BAs pivot into product management roles. Personally if I were a BA I would be looking to do the same. Saying that BAs will be around for a long time yet – i just donβt feel like the role has growth trajectory.
The market for BAs is probably roughly the same as it always was. Competitive for the candidates.
Have PM’d you.
Why are you moving back?
Tech market is raging. I think most of the 500k subscribers in this sub are software developers, it’s basically the only industry that you go into here if it’s not trades.
Can someone tell me what does a business analyst actually do
How many months is “a couple”? If ~3-4 or less, then start applying now and interview remotely.
I would get a head start.
The market is soft generally, even for engineering roles. So auxiliary functions like BA, QA, PM, etc. are even softer.
In general most companies hire FTE, reach out to recruiters on LinkedIn they know of all companies hiring not just those with the public listings, also you have a higher chance of being hired. As somebody said you should be able to get around 150k, depending on your skills, and that includes the skill of negotiations
But of downturn in the last year. A lot of contractors and FTE laid off and itβs taking a lot longer to get new roles. Government has tended to move from contractors to FTE in the last year.
I’m pretty sure 53KGBP will go a lot further in the North of England than 105KAUD will go in Melbourne. Australia has bad supply-demand imbalances across the economy, that the government just keeps making worse.
