From a newbie’s point of view it’s really difficult. I went through a 6-month bootcamp: people with prior experience in the field tended to do better and get hired within a couple of months while most career changers haven’t been hired in prolonged time and have considered dropping the pursuit altogether.
The ones without experience I’ve kept in touch with being hired aren’t getting offered a lot of money ($15-17/hr range). More experienced cohort students (5+ years of experience) were landing gigs at a fairly faster rate between $60-80k/year after maybe 2-3 months of looking. Because the pay is low and requirements are high a lot of career changers ended up falling back on their previous profession or finding side gigs for the time being.
It is impossible to ignore that the IT market is very competitive right now.
What is the common theme with candidates? There is a tone of experienced, qualified job hunters right now. In my non-HR knowledge head, leverging contacts you know inside a organisation, or creating that initial call does make a difference. Even if the hiring manager does not answer the phone, and on to the next.
For Junior’s it is difficult too. With the changes of technology (AI), automation, and this transformation period, imo it is hard to say how long this period would last. Country by country, region by region. It is a tough market.
Depending on your area, network around in any in person events. Go out of your way, and off your desk and find an event to put your name out there.
i’m a new grad looking for a job for 4-5 months and still not one call back lol. it’s horrible out here
