Hey there, remote warriors! 🌟 Let’s talk about commutes for occasional days in the office. If you only had to show up once every 4-6 weeks for a monthly meeting, what’s the longest commute you’d be willing to tackle for that one day?
Here’s a few pointers to consider:
– Are you willing to sacrifice time for a longer commute to save money on accommodations?
– Would you opt for a shorter commute even if it meant spending more on transportation or lodging?
– How important is work-life balance in your decision-making process?
Personally, I think finding a happy medium between convenience and cost-effectiveness is key. Perhaps looking into coworking spaces or short-term rentals near the office could be a solution that benefits both your wallet and your time management. What do you think? Let’s discuss! 💬 #WorkCommute #RemoteWorkSolutions
I did 2 hours each way, just one day a month for a team meeting. It wasn’t fun, but I could handle it with that frequency. I had to do bus or a walk to the train, then transfer from the train to the metro, and finally walk about 15 minutes. The worst was in winter because the train platform wasn’t covered and it rains in winter. We also get some pretty cold winter mornings.
These days, I’m glad I no longer have to do it. COVID completely disrupted bus services and the trains are completely overloaded. My husband does it sometimes and he sometimes can’t get on the train and has to go in the opposite direction get off, and then get on a train going where he needs to go. Now, the train workers are on strike, so there is no train service at all.
I’d do 2 hours of one way travel for once every 4-6 weeks.
I used to do a 2.25 hour commute, once every other month for one of our satellite offices, and at the time, that was as much as I’d want to do. I’m okay with longer travel these days (for personal reasons), so a monthly 2 hour trip wouldn’t annoy me.
I mean honestly, once every 4-6 weeks is really not that bad. I would drive up to three hours, maybe even a little more. Depending on the city and the accessibility of my local airport I wouldn’t be opposed to flying in for a meeting either. The position that I work in my industry is impossible to work from home, I am quite envious of you haha. Good luck!
Ill be willing to take a flight and stay in a hotel for a few days. Even a 3 hour drive wouldnt be much. Is like visiting your elderly mother who lives in another state. And still getting money. Win win.
30 mins
If it was a great job and I only had to appear 10 -12 times a year, 2 hrs would be no biggie. If it was a great paying job, I would even drive several more hours if it was on a Mon or Fri and maybe just stay overnight.
For 1 per month, I’d do 2 hrs drive. That’s 4 hrs on the road and , since it’s a monthly meeting, I assume the meeting may take a few hours. That’d be 8-10 hrs of work on that day
It really depends on what your other options are, doesn’t it?
Is there another WFH option that pays the same, etc?
2-3 hours
1.5 hour commute each way. Did a 2-hour round trip commute for 5 years.
It depends on if I’m driving or if I can take public transportation. I work remotely 4 days a week and go in on Tuesdays. I take the train for about an hour and walk to the office. The main issue is that I get off just late enough that I have to wait a while for the 5:54 train to go home.
I leave the house just before 6 am and get home just before 7 pm. Since I’m on a 9/80 schedule, 9 of those 13 hours are work. The rest of the time is getting to and from the train station, walking to and from work, and waiting for the train both ways. Fortunately, I work in downtown LA and there are some pretty great food options while I wait.
I enjoy being on the train because it gives me a chance to relax, read, listen to a podcast, etc. If I had to deal with California traffic and LA parking, I would hate it.
I did 90 minutes each way 5 days a week for two years. I won’t do more than a thirty minute commute ever again. I currently live 15 minutes from my job and go in twice a week. The mental load of a long commute isn’t worth it anymore.
In a once a month office situation for a good job, I’d fly anywhere in the us. Drive up to four hours. I’ve done this a few times at the VP level. I’m used to traveling 50% or more though.
Once per 4 to 6 weeks? anywhere on my continent, provided work is footing the travel bill.
How occasionally? I’d come in once a year from probably 13+ hrs away. But, I wouldn’t do that more than once a year. I don’t need to be there anyway.
Preferably though, I’d sign on with one of those “unlimited PTO” companies and see just how willing they are to honor that. I’d work one day a year max.
30 minutes.
Car- Like 2-2.5 hours. After that my body starts hating being in my car, especially in city and highway traffic. Unless the meeting was like a Monday, then sure, I’ve driven to the next major metro 5 hours away over a weekend (give or take rush hour in the major metro ugh), stayed in a hotel, attended meeting….then driven back (this part can blow if work also takes place the next day+no time off allotted)
Train/plane- if the part about attending the meeting was comped, no firm limit aside from if it’s overseas/non-commuter flight, have to account for hotel/jetlag/timezone changes etc. On my dime…have puddle jumped from one city to another major metro 1-2 hours away, usually end up having to skimp on the hotels that way though if I miss the last flights back out.
It depends on how much I liked the job and compensation. If I could work remotely for 4-6 weeks at a time and go into the office once then back home for 4-6 weeks, I’d travel just about anywhere.
Once a week I’d do 45 minutes to an hour. But to or 3 days a week I’m not going more than 30, 40 minutes tops. So that pretty much eliminates all hybrid roles, since I don’t live near anything.
Probably a flight or 3 hour drive
3 hours (one way) if its once a month, less if its more frequent
1-2 hours tops unless travel is paid for then wherever
30 minutes is my limit.
For every 6 weeks I’d do an hour each way. If they are footing the bill otherwise I’d be willing to do whatever. If not then it’s a zoom call or nothing lmao.
3h oneway. Every week.
Good to know is that my company has a own buss line due to bad commuter service. On that bus there is wifi and you can do some work. And count that time on the bus as work . 🙂
30 mins.
I fly in quarterly for meetings. Usually 2-3 days. I make sure to flex the corporate card each time because they’re making me be away from my family.
3 hours by trai. Plus bus 🙁 for two different crappy jobs.
Right bow, I’d absolutely refuse to commutee any longer than the same unless it’s related to my own business or salaried. No bullshit like that anymore 🙂
I fly to the Midwest for work once a month for 3 days so I guess the driving is moot for me.
That said, when I was living in LA, I would drive to San Diego twice a month for a couple days for work but didn’t mind at all. I think anything over 4 hours, if available, I’d jump on a flight.
Omy! I got a 90-day trial period for work and traveled 4 hours daily to reach the location they stationed me, so it was 8 hours back and forth, and the manager was horrible. I left the 3rd day 😂😭
4 hours back and forth
How occasionally is occasional? Because I’m willing to do a two hour drive if it means I only have to go in 1-2 days a week.
Granted in this dream I also make enough money for me to live in my dream farm house.
1.5 hour drive once a month.
Otherwise once everyone couple months with comped car and flights.
I actually hate my current role because it’s an hour drive daily. I did the math, and I’m losing out a full 40 hours a month from it.
