Have you ever had someone cash your tax return without your permission?🤔‼️ If so, my sister recently experienced this issue and we’re not sure what to do next. 🧐📬✉️ It was supposed to be delivered by mail, but when it never arrived, she filed a claim only to find out it was already cashed. 😱🤯 What steps should we take now to resolve this situation? 🤷♀️💸 #TaxReturn #IdentityTheft #StolenMail #HelpNeeded
Steps to Take:
- File a report with the IRS
- Contact the postal service for an investigation
- Check for any suspicious activity on bank statements
- Monitor credit reports for any unauthorized changes
- Consider placing a fraud alert on credit accounts
Call the IRS. It may take a bit of time to get someone on the line, but once you do they’re generally VERY helpful.
If the Treasury agrees that your sister was not the one who endorsed the check, they will send a replacement and that’s that. This kind of check fraud is really stealing from the government rather than stealing from you.
Be sure to use the correct terminology when dealing with the IRS. It was your sister’s tax *refund*
This happened to me and my wife. We had to file an extension and also had to inform the IRS, whom now send both of us our own unique 5 digit PIN code every year that we have to use to file.
Honestly I didn’t know why they wouldn’t just send everyone a 5 digit PIN every year, seems like it would stop a lot of fraudulent tax returns
