Honestly not a turn based, but is definitely a really fun and quick to get in pick up and put down. Katana Zero is one of my favorite games hands down.
Deep story too thatโs easy to get into and leaves an impression.
Baldurs gate 3 was such a surprising game that I highly recommend, turn based combat and the characters are written beautifully and you can really get lost in the world that Larian Studios made.
Marvel’s midnight Suns has very solid turn based combat with debatably too much story. If you like the story elements it’s a great ride.
Slay the Spire! The best turn based roguelike, imo, and I’ve played a few
Xcom 2
West of Loathing and Shadows over Loathing, they are goofy little turn based RPGs with a humorous story and a combat system thatโs pretty straight forward.
They are dumb fun and definitely worth a play if you want a turn based game that doesnโt require a hundred hours dumped into them.
FTL!
If you like darkest dungeon and slay the spire, try Xcom 2 or Balatro ๐ or midnight suns.
If you want turn based I think you can make a solid dent in an XCOM game in a few hours
If you have a console, I’d recommend Unicorn Overlord. It’s a really fantastic strategy game.
PC:
X-com (1&2) are probably some of the best turn-based strategy games;
FTL:Faster than light;
Halcyon 6: Starbase Commander
Resonance of Fate – this is a hidden gem of a sorta strategy/turn based RPG. The combat flow is unique combination of real-time and turn based. It takes some time to learn but it’s rewarding, however the story is meh.
Ghost runner very quick gameplay. Sometimes you feel like you are playing the game in 2x speed.
Fire emblem three houses. Turn based, story rich, and light strategy. Four hours would get a decent serving size.
Get some sleep
Sea of stars. Pixel art. Turn base combat
west of loathing is definitely more story than combat but it has quite a bit of combat in it too, and itโs hilarious, 10/10.
Steamworld Heist is pretty cool!
Imagine this thread picking up speed and OP getting bogged down with replies etc and down the rabbit hole you go and lose all that four hours free time.
Iโve had a lot of fun inscription! Itโs pretty simple to get the basic premise of it but has depth. And I really enjoyed the story because it was a little out there.
Balatro
baldur’s gate 3
Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default games are both turn based RPGs that were made for ‘pick up, put down’ type schedules. It doesn’t matter which one and what order.
Inscryption.
Earthbound if you’ve never played that…
OR Pokemon Firered Rocket Edition (GBA Rom Hack)
Both are highly enjoyable with great stories and since you’ll probably be emulating them, very digestible with save states. They’re digestible otherwise though and the nostalgia makes them very easy to play.
* Disco Elysium if you want the option to talk your way around combat
* Spacewreck if you want a smaller indie type RPG thats a lot of fun and decisions matter
* Inscryption if you want a slay the spire typer mechanic with a more complex environment and story (its kinda light weight myst meets slay the spire). Its a really underrated game
Baldurs Gate 3ย ย
ย Final Fantasy games, like FF 7 to 10
All those are time consuming, but worth the time.
