She’s getting a degree in mechanical engineering and you mention auto tech and mechanic roles? She needs to use that degree to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering with a goal of hiring on with an auto manufacturer at some point. I don’t know what the prospects are for a newly graduated mechanical engineer, so it’s entirely reasonable to expect to work in a non-automotive field while she build experience.
She’s wasting her degree pursuing mechanic and auto tech positions. May as well drop out now if that’s her goal – she’s paying for something she’ll be seeing minimal value from, otherwise.
For the average person, automotive industry roles don’t pay well unless you get into a union and/or move into an engineering role. It’s easy to find young high school graduates or dropouts that got into mechanics in their backyard, and the lay unfortunately tends to match once you factor in costs such as often needing to buy their own tools.
If she’s working towards a mechanical engineering degree, she should pursue mechanical engineering positions in industries she’s interested in. Automotive techs and mechanics are not mechanical engineers.
Coming fresh out of college, especially in the UK. I wouldn’t count on anything high paying especially in the automotive field. Major specialty manufacturers like Ferrari etc are going to want someone with years of experience unless she has done internships or something with them and based on this sub ME salaries in the UK are awful. I started in aftermarket automotive part design after college but even then it wasn’t a field I went into for the money. I went in because I love cars and designing.
