Has anyone else experienced being blocked from certain personnel issues in a workplace setting? 🤔 I was hired as the HR person for a church, but I’m excluded from board meetings where personnel matters are discussed. It’s creating a lack of respect among the staff because they know I have zero say in important decisions like time off requests, reviews, and raises. Is this normal in church or nonprofit environments?
Possible Solution:
Here are some steps that might help improve the situation:
– Schedule a meeting with the board to discuss the importance of HR involvement in personnel matters.
– Advocate for professional development or training opportunities to show your expertise in the field.
– Offer to sign a confidentiality agreement to address any concerns about sensitive information.

Super common at any small business, and even at large ones that are sole proprietorships.
Don’t take it personally. Provide value, ask for feedback, tackle action, and seek better roles in alignment with your strengths and desires.
From what we know about churches, you probably don’t want to be liable for having heard anything said in that room anyway….
I used to work at a museum, and the only employee who attended board meetings was the director. Technically the public was permitted to attend board meetings, but I don’t think anyone ever did in the time I was there.
This is typical with nonprofits. I had to make a shift into Grants and Contracts Management for a local nonprofit due to being laid off, I have an intern for grants management but I cannot teach her enough of the job to use her so I deem her as general support. I don’t even try to use her for the purpose that she was hired for. FYI, I’m also actively looking elsewhere so I empathize with you.
Perhaps they are discussing moral lapses vs illegal behavior. I knew a church where an Elder was having an affair with a church member. He was released of his duties.
The affair partner left in a huff one Sunday morning when she was told she couldn’t teach Sunday School!
Example of affairs NOT being about looks. Wife was not only adorable but the nicest person. AP was a middle aged harpy.
