Lmfao. I skipped the obvious scam that is college and make 80k a year working from home. All the stupidest people I know went to college.
I sense your frustration. About 32 years ago, I graduated with a BA in Communications and Media and couldn’t get a job either. I floundered for a year staffing a VCR repair shop. Then I ran into a mentor from Sony who told me to get an AS Telecommunications degree (Broadcast Engineering) and I would get a job. I did as he said and the advice turned out to be true. Your BA will be good on the resume and expands your experience which you can use to move into a management position later. There are decent jobs for Audiovisual installers and designers out there. Hope that helps for whatever it’s worth.
A weaker job market for a profession that’s likely saturated with graduates desperate for work. The hard truth might be that it’s a low value degree and certificate so you’ll need to get creative, find a nice and work hard to weasel your way in somewhere.
It’s all a scam.
We all find the truth after walking off that stage, hits like a ton of bricks! Internships, extracurriculars, clubs, reccomendations all for not. Im not sure gpa matters anymore…
Real, ask for a degree or experience, not both
Hey, I hear you! I invested four years and $120,000 in a BA focused on minority grievances. There were no jobs, so I doubled down on an 18-month program for reparations and other handouts. Still waiting for that first job!!
What types of places have you been applying to? In my experience, a lot of varied places can use people with Communications skills. Even though you have your certificate, do you have other comms-related skills that could be marketable?
I ask because I have a bachelors in TV/Radio Production, and a Masters in Digital Media.
I started out working in local tv news, went back for my Masters degree, also taught undergrad classes while I was working in the Masters.
Then after the Masters, I worked in non-profit communication, doing video and media production, plus I was the organization spokesperson. (I took some PR classes, so I had a baseline of knowledge about it.)
Got laid off from that job, so I landed in real estate video production in Jan. 2020, then Covid hit.
Found something new in March ‘21 working for a trade association, they needed someone to help run their virtual conference, so my tv experience came in handy there.
Was laid off from THAT job in Jan. ‘23. Now work in video production for a cyber school.
All that to say, I wouldn’t have guessed my career trajectory, but I started realizing that I had a much broader base of skills than I originally thought. So even if something is “less related” to your field and it sounds interesting, it doesn’t hurt to apply and see what happens.
Ever think about construction? Safety is mostly about Communication. Spanish is a plus.
Trying to get a job afterwards has always scared me as you’re depending on someone else for your financial freedom, that’s scary.
Communication is one of those junk degrees. You really need to know someone to get it the door. There is no listing on indeed for someone with a Communication degree. You kind of need to forge your own path
Aside from that it’s just to damn expensive and probably not necessary it still is the way forward. Bad job market
Keep trying.
I have my Masters and can’t get hired either. I hear you and empathize with you.
The less informed you are, the more employable.

Ask the school resources for leads. Try looking for internships. Find out the lead employers in your field and in your region. Send your resume to their hiring manager.
You were sold a bad product, I’m sorry.
I feel the same way…. Graduated with good grades too
The job market kinda sucks right now.
“Counselors” a.k.a. salesman, probably have to upsell degrees that aren’t selling, the college is a business first, so they pitched you, “You can use this degree in public affairs, nonprofit administration, marketing, advertising, relations, consulting, even journalism!” LOL
Did Coursera collaborated – conspired – with your career councilor’s? The Google Career Certificate? “Now, if you’re really serious about entering the digital marketing and social media industry, you should consider undertaking training through short courses or even getting a degree in this field. Google offers a career certificate called Digital Marketing and E-commerce Professional Certificate, and it is available via Coursera.”
The college scam delusion is fading as time goes on
Welcome to my world! I graduated in 2012 with a bachelors in interior design. It’s tough man! Unless you are in the medical or food industry you should always have a job.
That’s a degree that is basically impossible to get a job with unless you had an internship and really strong interpersonal skills.
So many people go for jobs that you are trying for that you really have to stand out and just a degree isn’t enough.
You should be pissed at your school for offering such a degree.
I don’t mean to be that guy, and downvote me to oblivion if you will.
But…
You have expertise in communications with an exstra certification in social media. Why are you not blowing up on all the social media platforms and leveraging that for a job? Build up a following and post great content and then use that as a way to land an internship or an entry-level job at a big company.
How many followers do you have right now?
This has been the gag since the 90’s.
It was all just to set you apart from the others. To prove you could stick with something that may or may not be relevant to your future career.
The generation of folks born from the 60’s to the 90’s had figured out it’s not really about what you know, but who you know.
There was a quote in Tulsa King about college: all the college degree does, is show a potential employer you have the ability to show up the same place for four years and perform a series of tasks at least a 70% level. And anymore unless it’s an engineering or medical field most degrees are not worth the investment.
I work in communications (though my bachelor’s is not in communications). Your degree is not worthless and there are a lot of great jobs in communications (I’m not ultra wealthy but I do make close to six figures) but you need a combination of your degree and experience (which can be intern, volunteer or freelance!) to be qualified for jobs. Happy to offer more advice if desired.
In the meantime I would 1) get any job that will take you and 2) work on building your skills. Do Google Analytics Academy, learn Photoshop, take the free Hubspot courses, do a social media campaign for a friend’s business, volunteer for a small nonprofit and revamp their website…whatever you can.
One of the great lies of our time
Don’t have one. All the jobs that are “starting roles” or “entry level” of higher paying customer service type roles require a bachelor’s…
J Cole became a rapper and he’s successful.
Because a bachleor’s degree and certificate are not a walking invitation to give me a job
Communications isn’t worthless, but I’ve had a rough time finding a better job years after graduating.
It’s a terrible job market with trends of layoffs, the threat of AI, inflation, pretty much everything that would limit the amount of hiring in every industry.
It shouldn’t be *this* bad.
Have you looked at jobs with the federal government (usajobs.gov) and/or your local and state government? Also maybe intern with a political campaign?
Higher education is a scam for most. It makes sense for STEM majors but for most others it’s just a way to incur debt. Which is what sustains the debt based ponzi monetary system that underpins the world economy
Try learning some comp sci. Way more useful than your degrees to get a job tbh
I believe that a degree only gets you considered to get hired at a company. Work experience and strong references, references that are known in your industry and area, will get you far.
Expect an entry level job no matter what degree or certification you have when you’re just starting out. Once you’re in, you’ll be job hopping from within the industry through connections and not public job boards where everyone and their grandmother is applying.
