Why did a lady laugh at me when buying beer?
Last night, I found myself in an unexpected situation at Walmart when a lady laughed at me while I was purchasing a six-pack of Mickeys Malt Liqueur at the self-checkout. This encounter has left me puzzled and seeking answers as to why this lady found it amusing, and I cannot help but wonder if there is a deeper cultural or social significance behind her reaction.
To provide some context, I am a scrawny, 22-year-old Caucasian male who, according to some, looks even younger, possibly around 16 years old. It is important to mention the racial aspect of the story, as the woman who laughed at me was African American, and her partner, a man, was with her when the incident occurred. However, it is crucial to approach this situation without making any assumptions or drawing conclusions solely based on racial stereotypes.
Firstly, let’s explore why someone might find it amusing to see a person buying a particular brand of beer. Mickeys Malt Liqueur, known for its affordability and relatively high alcohol by volume (ABV%), could be viewed as a low-budget or cheap alcohol choice. This perception may stem from its association with certain demographics or a reputation that has developed over time. It is plausible that the affordability of Mickeys may have played a role in the amusement expressed by the lady at Walmart, as if my choice of beer indicated a lack of sophistication or financial resources.
However, this alone does not fully explain the lady’s reaction, as many individuals choose lower-priced alcoholic beverages based on personal preferences, financial circumstances, or even loyalty to a particular brand. Therefore, it is essential to consider other factors that could have influenced her response.
One possible explanation could be related to cultural and social contexts. Alcohol consumption can often be influenced by cultural norms, preferences, and traditions. Different communities may have their specific attitude towards certain types of alcohol or brands. For instance, in some social circles, certain alcoholic beverages might be associated with particular age groups, gender, or socioeconomic backgrounds. It is important to approach this topic with sensitivity and respect for cultural diversity, avoiding generalizations or stereotypes.
In this scenario, the lady’s reaction might have been influenced by a cultural or social understanding that associates Mickeys Malt Liqueur with certain behaviors or stereotypes that elicited amusement. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that these associations can vary greatly from person to person and should not be seen as universally applicable. Each individual’s experiences, personal beliefs, and upbringing shape their perception of various aspects of life, including alcohol choices and preferences.
It is worth mentioning that humor is subjective and deeply influenced by personal experiences, cultural background, and individual perspectives. What one person finds funny, another may not. The lady who laughed at me might have had personal reasons, inside jokes, or simply a different sense of humor that led to her reaction.
In conclusion, the incident at Walmart where a lady laughed at me while buying a six-pack of Mickeys Malt Liqueur remains a puzzling and perplexing experience. While there may be hints of cultural or social relevance, such incidents are highly subjective, and it is essential to approach them without reinforcing stereotypes or making assumptions based on race or any other factors. Understanding that humor is deeply individual and influenced by a multitude of factors will help us appreciate and respect the diversity of perspectives and experiences that shape our world.
most likely reminiscing when they used to drink ‘em and/or thought nobody else drinks them anymore. Like seeing one in the wild.
Maybe they were recently talking about the stupid shit they did in high school. She was like “Remember buying 40oz Mickeys from the gas station with our fake IDs?” And he was like “I’ll never drink malt liquor again. I had a hangover for two days.” Then she saw you checking out.
It might be an age thing I’m old and Mickey’s was a popular young persons beer back in the day, they probably got joy from reminiscing when they saw you.
I’ve bought Mickey’s as a nostalgia beer many times. I actually like it from time to time.
It probably has nothing to do with you. They may have a mickys secret just The two of them. It’s not always a dagger when people laugh.
There could be so many reasons. Maybe they were just talking about that type of alcohol recently or it’s an inside joke. Maybe they just picked some up that day, or debated on it. Maybe you looked like someone they knew who also drank that brand and it tickled them. The point is you’ll never know, and who cares 🤷🏼♀️
Probably an inside joke. I have a few friends and I remind them constantly that men who drink Michelob moan when they wipe their ass, as they drink their Michelob. I usually chuckle to myself when I see people buying it. Not because that’s what I actually believe but it reminds me of my buddies.
Sounds like some sort of inside joke between the two of them and had nothing to do with you
I feel like it’s probably some sort of inside joke, and had nothing to do towards you at all. Just the drink itself brought back some funny memory for them.
Dude if I saw you buying 40s of hurricanes I’d laugh too. Not at you but at my memories of them. Thst is likely what happened here.
Probably just a joke or comment between them. Not that deep!
It’s probably because they used to by 6ers of the Mickey Granades back in the day. They had a laugh because they haven’t had it in a while and didn’t know people drank it.
It’s an age thing. My older brothers drank that in the early 80s, so I probably would have laughed at you too. And we are very white. The choice of beers back in the day is why I didn’t drink beer until 2007 when I discovered that there are some good beers that I like.
They drank it on their first date 20+ years ago and the date went terribly wrong.
Maybe they used to drink it when they were younger? Who knows, but there’s probably a personal story there somewhere.
They probably were reminiscing about their use 😂 they weren’t laughing at you but with you.
Malt liquor is stereotypically a poor black-man’s drink; Blacks and Hispanics make up a core of the market. It’s also just an older drink; she prob remembered drinking that 20 years back with a fake ID
She prob found it genuinely funny; I doubt there was any malice there.
If you don’t have blurry flashbacks after seeing a Mackey bottle you’re doing it wrong. Some of us laugh, some of us cry, but everyone seems to regret it. I don’t know a single person that goes to it first but I don’t know many people who haven’t had one.
Aight dammit I’m from b-more I drink OE an smoke newport 100s I’m 42 and I got money it’s just what I like.
Sounds like an inside joke, probably has nothing to do with race or perceived notion of who drinks what. Now if you had an MD 20/20…
Didn’t know the Mickey’s were still around.
We’d drink those things, wake up the next morning and it taste like a monkey slept in your mouth.
Maybe that’s the drink they used to get drunk on when they first met.
So many possibilities. You’re over thinking this.
Could be an inside joke between the two of them. And has nothing to do with you.
Because you bought what they probably drank in high school or college. If someone was drinking boones farm or mad dog, I would have the same reaction but in my head
I’m a white dude, back in the late 70s early 80s in high school, we drank Mickey’s all the time. It was good beer and easy to slam the wide mouth.
Of course back then the beer choices in the stores that sold to minors wasn’t a big selection.
They probably had some kind of shared inside joke about the beer that you wouldn’t be aware of.
It’s like when I see young people buying Boones Farm. 😀 Brings back memories.
In the hood we all drank mickeys big mouth because it was cheap and strong malt liquor. It always gave you a good buzz . They just laugh because of their their days of drink it
Mickey’s is the shit. Just get it really cold because the flavor isn’t that good when it warms up a bit.
Mickey’s is the Cadillac of malt liquor and was the preferred drink of choice when I was in the service. Enjoy the drink and spread the good word far and wide.
