So, I’ve noticed something strange happening with my wife (24) over the last three months. It’s hard to explain, but she seems to have these weird episodes about 7 or 8 times. 😟
- She’ll be just sitting there, focused on whatever she’s doing, but suddenly she’ll start speaking in complete gibberish. It’s her usual voice, but I can’t make sense of what she’s saying!
- These moments last about 10 seconds before she snaps back to normal, totally unaware that anything happened at all. I’ll mention it to her, like: “Hey, you were talking nonsense” or “You didn’t notice the dog jump on the couch?”
- Each time, she insists it’s nothing and claims, “I’m just really tired.” It’s like she genuinely thinks it’s no big deal. 🤷♂️
The scariest part? One time it happened while she was driving next to me. 😳 She zoned out for a few seconds and spoke some unintelligible words. I had to grab the wheel to steer us safely off the road. After she came back to her senses, she simply said, “I think I was just really tired.” But it was midday and she hadn’t even worked that day!
She really hates hospitals and the idea of undergoing a bunch of tests makes her uncomfortable. I don’t want to drag her in unless I’m sure something’s wrong, but when I bring it up, she strongly believes there’s nothing to worry about. It’s a tough situation where I’d have to convince her to go with me.
- These episodes come randomly, sometimes twice in one week, sometimes not for a month.
- She says no one at work has noticed anything unusual about her either.
Quick background on her: She’s not on any medication, doesn’t take vitamins, and has no serious medical history aside from some occasional back pain after a minor car crash years ago.
Has anyone here experienced similar situations or have advice on how to approach this? It’s really concerning, and I want to make sure she’s okay. What would you suggest? 🩺💬
I would schedule a meeting with a neurologist. These episodes are suspect of focal seizures with impaired awareness. Does she often drive or go swimming alone?
Unprovoked, stereotypical, self-limiting episodes that she has no recollection of warrants a work-up for seizures. Especially if this is completely new or the frequency has been increasing during the last 3 months. Preferably sooner than later.
A history of accidents with possible head trauma (car accident) is relevant to these episodes, be sure to bring this up to the neurologist as well.
Try and capture the episode on video next time. That way you can show her and the doctor.

She needs to stop driving ASAP.
Agree with the neurologist this is highly suggestive of a the seizure
