Hey everyone, have you ever felt like you’re stuck in a work situation that just keeps getting worse? 🤦♂️ I’ve been working remotely in IT for 4 months now and still don’t have a work computer. 😩 Here are just a few issues I’m dealing with:
– No work computer after 4 months
– Sketchy remote access by supervisor
– Unpredictable remote work schedule
– Lack of training and constantly changing systems
– Inappropriate sharing of personal information by the boss
– Poor financial outlook for the company
– Lack of admin credentials for client access
I’m at a loss for what to do next. I’ve put in a lot of effort to improve things, but it feels like I’m hitting a wall. Should I stick it out or start looking for a new opportunity? Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated! 🤔
Possible Solution:
– Have a frank conversation with your supervisor about your concerns and the need for a work computer
– Document all communication regarding your work setup and schedule
– Begin actively looking for new job opportunities while still employed for financial stability
– Seek support from colleagues or HR if available for assistance in resolving these issues.
Send a formal email to your manager and manager’s manager informing them you will stop using your personal devices for work purposes.
They should provide work related equipment to you which will be used for work purposes.
I worked at an MSP for a while, a long time ago, and it was BYOD, which was really fkin weird cause I’m doing “security audits” on clients environments using my own laptop which has god knows what on it.
I pulled my boss aside and said “hey this is a huge liability, we cant be doing this” — and then a week later everyone got a new macbook.
Needless to say I still left that place once a new opportunity arose.
Your place sounds like a shit show lol. Don’t quit without something lined up, but I’d def be looking for something new ASAP.
You’re in a bad situation and should get out immediately.
Leave that company ASAP. If there was a checklist of red flags, this company could check off, it has done basically every single one of them. You need to seek employment elsewhere, period. Get and sign an offer, then put in your two weeks. Period. No more ifs/buts/maybes. They are not going to do that for you. It’s time. Long past time, actually.
GTFO. GET. OUT.
run
Can they make you work without providing you with proper equipment? Also, what company allows unmanaged computers to connect to their environment? They can’t have any sort of security.
So everyone told you not to use your personal machine and get a work machine. They are right. I won’t beat the dead horse.
Since you haven’t gotten one, what I would do is build a VM (windows allows for hypver-v, use vmware workstation, whatever), and use “that” as your work computer. This will allow you to have the same machine but completely different environment. That will protect you from snooping boss or anything else.
If you do it on a VM, you can shut your VM off at night. You won’t keep personal data on there. It’ll be company data only. When you quit, just destroy the VM disks.
Also, you aren’t an entrepreneur. You are an employee. I would ask him where your cut of the profits/company ownership is?
What does MSP stabs for ?
It’s 10x easier to get a job while you have a job. Sure, you’d have to explain why you are looking having only been there 4 months which is a strike against you… but that would be outweighed by the advantage of currently being employed while seeking a new job.
The whole response to the 3AM thing, it sounds like your company is the butt of jokes like in those “toodaloo” videos: [https://www.youtube.com/@loewhaley](https://www.youtube.com/@loewhaley)
Crappy situation, but they at least been paying you on time?
If so, it might be worthwhile to just bite the bullet and pick up a cheap used business laptop. Something like a Dell Latitude 5400 should be around $200 or less, and be more than fast enough for your workload. You get to keep work and personal separate, and when/if you finally get a company laptop, you can use this laptop for testing/home lab.
Bro, leave. The F are you doing man?
Your computer can be used in any legal disputes now that you put work stuff on it. I would stop immediately and work in a vm going forward if you can. Any issues or disruptions is solely on your owner at that point on.
You don’t work for an MSP … you work for a shop that grew up enough to buy into that model but never learned how to operate it. Until he refines the model to actually work for his clients he is going to keep teeter-tottering on the brink of business death.
