“Facing title issues after buying a car 2.5 weeks ago – what to do? #carpurchase #titleproblem #dealershiptitleissue”
Struggling with a dealership that won’t hand over the title of the car you bought almost three weeks ago? Let’s break down the situation and figure out the best course of action.
## Background:
### Details of the issue:
– Purchased pre-owned trade-in vehicle almost three weeks ago
– Cannot take the car off the lot due to missing title
– Employee traded in their vehicle and got a new one
– Vehicle bought has Massachusetts title, but originally registered in New Hampshire
– Dealership needs original New Hampshire title to register the car in your name
## Current Situation:
– Initially told title would be mailed from RMV to original owner, then brought in
– Now told title could arrive with a shipment from FedEx
– Unpleasant experience with dealership from the start
– Waiting almost three weeks, paying for a car you can’t drive or insure
## Possible Actions:
– Cancel the sale and find another car, despite waiting for the perfect one
– Follow up with the dealership for updates on title status
– Seek legal advice if the situation drags on without resolution
It can take time to get the title in situations like this. Your options are to wait it out or cancel the purchase and get a refund.
You know you unwind the deal and you do not want to.
What is your legal question?
Why would they need the original New Hampshire title if the car is currently titled in Massachusetts?
Why are you paying for the insurance already?
Do you want the car or back out?
If back out, call State DMV and/or Local Law Enforcement.
They have sold a car they do not have the title for.
Do they have another car that you might accept – for the same or similar $$$.
At their cost – for “selling” a car they should not sell without documents.
Either gotta back out or wait.
I would suggest backing out and reporting them for selling cars without titles to your state AG.
You are just going to have to wait. Remember, most people who work at car dealerships aren’t the sharpest tools. Once you take possession of the vehicle you might want to contact DMV and make sure all was done correctly.
Sounds like someone got carvana’d
This is no time to be your usual agreeable, patient, easy going self. Tell them they have 24 or 48 hours to fix this before you make some serious noise. It’s not a good look or business practice for a dealership to sell cars without titles, so use that to your advantage
I had this happen in Vermont years ago, dealer sold me a used car and didn’t have the title in hand, but they issued a standard 30 day temporary plate and were submitting the paperwork for me. On day 29 I started the phone calls.
Threatening to call the local police, state police, the registry, the state’s attorney general (and now I’d add reviews on SM) for selling me a pick up without documentation were surprisingly effective.
The cherry on top was when the dealer had to come to my job with the paperwork and new plate, and replaced the temporary cardboard plate in an absolute downpour. That asshole was soaked to the skin with muddy knees but I refused to give him the kudos he thought he deserved for finally getting it done. He was about 2.5 times my size and it was so fun to switch the power dynamic on him
Don’t let them intimidate you, if one of their workers has to spend the day tracking down the title and waiting in a registry line, not your problem
