Understanding the Double Standard
👉 Ever wondered, "Why is female on male violence seen as a joke?" 🤔 Despite significant discussions around equality, this question often highlights a prevailing double standard.
Historical Context and Media Influence
📺 Media has long perpetuated the idea that men should brush off physical attacks from women. Think about slapstick comedies and viral videos where a woman hits a man—it’s often shown as humorous or trivial.
Gender Stereotypes
💪 Men are traditionally viewed as the stronger sex. This stereotype suggests that they should be able to withstand physical confrontations, even if they’re the victims.
🚺 Meanwhile, women are perceived as less threatening, which minimizes the seriousness of the violence they might inflict.
Impact on Men’s Mental Health
😔 The "joke" aspect severely impacts men’s mental health. They may feel embarrassed or stigmatized, leading them to remain silent about their abuse.
- 📉 Stigma reduces the likelihood of men seeking help.
- 🗣️ Men may feel emasculated, affecting their self-esteem.
Challenging the Norms
It’s crucial to challenge these norms. Fostering awareness and empathy can help change societal views.
Takeaways
- 🚫 Violence has no gender.
- 💡 Men and women both deserve to be protected and taken seriously.
- 🌍 Education and open discussion can shift perspectives.
Let’s break the stereotype and acknowledge that violence against anyone, regardless of gender, is no laughing matter. 🚫💔
Because it’s, physically, less likely to result in injury/death. Mentally or psychologically, it’s just as bad in both directions, but physically it not.
Because anything that goes against an expected social norm is often mocked. In the past, the expected gender roles were that men were the physical abusers and women weren’t, so people would make fun of the idea of that dynamic being flipped. Similarly, people commonly used to make fun of the idea of men being gay, or crossdressing, etc. It wasn’t right to use as a punchline back then either, but, not following the norms of masculinity has been treated as a joke for a long time. Hopefully will continue to lessen over time.
Do people actually think that?
Because knocking an average woman out cold takes almost no effort.
For the record, I’m not saying it’s funny. Just that pretending there’s no difference between the threat posed by a man toward a woman versus a woman toward a man isn’t exactly an honest assessment.
Because we still have draconians amongst us.
People forget, that weaponizable items more advanced than “big ole stick” have been invented.
…as such physical strength is not end all be all of physical confrontations. Bringing fists to a knife fight aint helpful.
As such people expect (the generally) more physically fit gender to be in no danger ever.
The only people I’ve seen not take it seriously are other men, they tend to make men’s issues a taboo subject. Never seen someone say it’s funny, but that’s why it’s not as talked about. Also because the opposite happens at a much higher rate and is usually more severe
Laughter is the brain’s reaction to things it doesn’t understand. A man being the victim of violence upends the expectations of men being more powerful and women being demure. So to people who hold those expectations, it’s funny.
Double standards, etc.
Generally though it comes down to the fact that women aren’t seen as a threat.
A man gets violent, there’s a high chance he could kill you. A woman gets violent, people act like she’s a toddler throwing a tantrum. They laugh and find it funny. While also mocking men who get abused.
I don’t think people make jokes at all about it anymore. I think the real problematic thing is when people justify violence against an individual, or brush it off as not a big deal based on the “group” that that person is a part of. I see women make comments like this, as if it’s okay just because historically men have been abusive, so it’s sort of payback.
The same reason toddler on adult violence is seen as a joke.
Male rape is seen as a joke, too.
Sexism
It isn’t. It really isn’t. Things are finally changing but changing fast.
Because it is a normal in our society to believe that violence from someone or something that is perceived as weaker is not effective. The same reason why discrimination from minorities is tolerated much more compared to discrimination from the majority. I don’t agree with this, but it is what it is.
Because women are almost always slower and weaker than men. Like a 10 year old hitting an adult.
Because misogyny dictates that they only acknowledge the generally less brutish physical aspects of the abuse and not the mental impact
I dont think women attacking men is not seen as a big deal outside of some weird groups tho.
Is she a trained fighter? Was there a weapon involved? What’s the average crazy woman going to do attacking a man other than get the shit kicked out of her for her troubles?
toxic masculinity in some way
Because they see the man as a failure and lack any sympathy for him.
Not because of “patriarchy” or “toxic masculinity”
