π₯π Fired not being a ‘cultural fit’ after 10mo of working and just getting a 12% raise last week, what does that mean?? π€― I’m flabbergasted. I was working my butt off, 12-hour days, weekends. It was all a lot of work, and they finally let me hire two assistants AND gave me a huge raise last week. I decided to take two days off to go to the beach with my kids and come back to being axed, for “not being a culturally good fit” after working there for almost a year?? I just don’t get it. π
Feeling Confused and Betrayed
Finding it hard to process this as I didn’t “do” anything wrong. How do I find a new job, do I do that right now or work through this mentally first? I’m an absolute mess, this was my dream job, and I thought I was doing a great job. ππ
Seeking Solutions and Moving Forward
- Take some time to breathe and process your emotions. It’s completely normal to feel hurt and confused after being unexpectedly let go.
- Update your resume and start searching for new job opportunities. Don’t rush into applying for jobs immediately if you’re not emotionally ready.
- Consider reaching out to a career counselor or therapist to help you navigate this challenging time and gain clarity on your next steps.
- If you believe you were wrongfully terminated, consulting with an employment lawyer to understand your rights and options regarding severance pay is a wise decision.
Empowering Yourself for the Future
Remember, this setback does not define your worth or capabilities. Use this experience as an opportunity to reassess your career goals and values, and make decisions that align with your long-term happiness and success. You are resilient, and you will emerge stronger from this challenging situation. πͺβ¨
Sounds like the kinda culture where you donβt take time off or have a family. If youβre gonna contact a lawyer I would do asap.
I had something very similar happen to me. No negative feedback, but also no direction either. Just called into a meeting with HR and told I was being let go (after 2 months of working there and completing every task I was given).
What did they pay you for severance? If its a months salary or more it’s very doubtful you’ll get any more, and the lawyer will take a good chunk of it
Get that exact line in writing. Any employment lawyer will be able to squeeze your former employment on that one as it is clear discrimination.Β
Iβve seen people get let go because they were annoying to work with. Not the official reason.
Take the weekend off and start looking on Monday Morning
did you witness any toxic culture? especially surrounding taking days off? From what you said, the WLB is abysmal and that by itself is a red flag.
Basically, after you trained TWO new assistants and then went on vacation, the company realized that your two assistants could handle the load and let you go.
Don’t sign anything the employer wants you to sign (they’ll often hold your bonus hostage to get a free and clear departure)
Contact an employment lawyer. Sue them for ‘Familial discrimination’
The raise means nothing regarding fit and performance. Raises are often the same or close for everyone for legal reasons. Are you in the USA, most states can fire you at will the same as you can give resignation at will.
Buddy got let go after 7 or 8 years. They said he wasn’t a good fit going forwards. He worked his ass off and got along with everyone.
I would leave them a scathing Glassdoor review so no one else has to deal with that BS
Were you fired, or downsized/laid off?
Because sometimes when youβre downsized, itβs not because you did anything wrong. Sometimes they just have to pick someone.
Just got fired and pretty similar. But let me tell you a truth, deep down you know itβs they who suck, not you.
Iβm really sorry it happened and that you held the job in such high esteem. You deserve better than that treatment.
Sounds like you ran afoul of some interdepartmental politics
Whoever you report to clearly has your back and has been both giving you raises, resources and reports.
I suspect all the attention you were getting raised the attention of someone else higher in the chain, who brought the hammer down.
They made an example of you.
It’s an excuse for another issue. Sometimes discrimination, sometimes they gave your job to someone with connections …
Just happened to me too! The best part is they told the PA unemployment factfinder that I was terminated with cause for inappropriate behavior. They literally let me go with no reason given and a severance, saying I wasn’t the right fit. Currently in the process of sorting this shit out, but goddamn are some employers petty.
Could they think youβre an asshole? Doing the main part of your job but being disliked by your peers wonβt cut it in most jobs. Not saying you are an asshole but do you think you werenβt liked by your peers?
It is shitty that they didnβt try to explain it you. Could it also be that thereβs something someone might not like about you that is protected by law? Like religion, race, etc?
> what does that mean??
a. Probably realized they couldn’t actually pay you 12% more.
b. They didn’t like you.
Were you looking at porn on the company laptop
That really sucks and Iβm sorry.
One of my lessons learned is that stuff happens and you may never know why. All you can control is yourself. Hang in there.
“Cultural fit” can be a catch all for companies to let people go. Saves them the time of actually have a real reason.
Did you talk to anyone at work about politics, religion, sexuality, or anything else that could cause division?
This is why at will employment should be illegal. They should be required by law to state an official reason for letting someone go.
Working 12 hours a day and on weekends was your dream job? Think of this as a promotion to working at a better company. Yes there’s the painful job interview process but you’ll come out the other end happier and better off for it.
Reframe: youβre getting a severance, so you were laid off, RIFed, NOT fired. This is almost never personal. Donβt sweat it.
Eventually someone will give you the real story; by that time you wonβt care.
Pretty much same thing happened to me recently. Nothing but green flags and positive feedback until I reached the last day of my contract and they told me they weren’t renewing essentially. Sucked ass. There was a LOT more to it, but everyone on my team was quite shocked and saddened to see me go. Like, to the point that there was some actual denial from a senior member of the team.
It sucks. But I’ve got 31 weeks of EI and acquired a buttload of tangible skills, training and accomplishments there. It’s still pretty shocking that I’m not going back, but in management there was EXTREMELY unprofessional and hands-off, but the job and colleagues were interesting and awesome. But life goes on.
Itβs likely you were rubbing a manager the wrong way and they didnβt have the balls to tell you to their face. Cultural fit is such a scapegoat excuse for βsomeone doesnβt like youβ
My guess is someone with a lot of sway hates you for some reason. Β or, the complete oppositeβnot personal but cost cutting. Β But seems weird after raise. Β
You get a decent raise and fired a week later?
That’s attorney time.
Someone with more power didnβt like you, you took protected leave, you engaged in protected action, and/or your boss is a passive aggressive moron for either not performance managing you or not letting this be a role elimination, which it could be.
If youβre in a protected class and point 2 or 3 are true, itβs worth a talk with an employment attorney.
Youβll likely get UI. Donβt forget to file.
The 12% pay raise may have been a βmake goodβ from the company. Iβve heard of companies that had to go through layoffs inflating those employeesβ salaries so that they can command more at their next job. Just throwing that out there to potentially eliminate some confusion about the mixed signals.
Maybe for some reason someone important wanted someone else that they knew at your new position. Politics are hard to navigate sometimes.
It sucks.
your dream job is to work 12 hours days including weekends? you are exactly whats wring with the job industry.
Someone(s) doesnβt like you
