#JobTermination #LegalAdviceNeeded #HumanRightsComplaint
Hey everyone,
I recently got terminated from my job, and it’s been quite a rollercoaster since then. Here’s a quick rundown of what’s been happening:
– Got let go unexpectedly after no prior issues
– Was offered 7.5 weeks pay, but lawyered up due to a potential human rights complaint
– Lawyers negotiated for more compensation, but now I’ve been left hanging
– Struggling to find new legal representation and feeling lost
Despite this, I’ve managed to secure a better paying job in the same field. But I still need help navigating this legal battle.
If anyone has been in a similar situation or has any advice to offer, I’d really appreciate it. I’m open to suggestions on how to proceed, whether it’s accepting the initial offer or pushing forward to the tribunal.
Let’s share our experiences and insights to help each other out. Your support could make a world of difference to me and others facing similar challenges. 💼🤝
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and suggestions!
I would try a legal advice sub.
But I agree with you. You should have taken the generous offer of 7.5 weeks.
Take whatever your former employer is offering you and move on.
Lol lawyers up with 1.5 years in. Take the package and move on.
If you’re in Ontario and it’s going to the Human Rights Tribunal, you can get free representation from the Human Rights Legal Support Centre. https://hrlsc.on.ca
Other provinces may have something similar.
Were you under the impression that they needed a reason to terminate you? It seems that’s what you’re implying when you say you weren’t written up, etc. before being terminated.
It also sounds like you couldn’t do the job because of the car accident.
The fact that your lawyer led you down this path and then just dumped you should tell you something as well… Then you add on that other lawyers aren’t taking your case…
You’re putting up this much of a fight for a 1.5 year jobs while they are offering you 7.5 weeks of pay? You should have taken that package. Move on with your life
Someone on same sub got 2 weeks after working 8 years and didn’t lawyer up LOL. Wtfff.
Can you explain why you “lawyered up” in the first place?
My husbands friend is an employment lawyer and told me he tries to close his files in two weeks. The human rights tribunal is more of a last resort as it takes so long to get a hearing.
At the very least, there’s a lesson to be learned here about communicating with lawyers. Were they working on contingency? I would reach out to them to clarify that.
Consider your costs, including time off work and stress, when deciding whether or not to proceed to the human rights tribunal. The fact they reposted the job quickly after firing you is probably irrelevant. You’ll have to prove they discriminated against you on the basis of a disability and that they failed to accommodate you to the point of undue hardship.
This is what happens when people get greedy
>Over the next couple of months, my lawyer advises me that they’ve been emailing each other back and forth and that a resolution should be coming.
>Fast forward to last month, my lawyer tells me that since this matter is going to go to the tribunal,
I don’t understand how it jumped from “a resolution is forthcoming” to “tribunal”. Basically it went from a no-tribunal settlement, to a tribunal. I don’t understand how or why, especially if the tribunal is not your lawyers area of expertise.
I’d put in a request to receive a copy of all these “back and forth emails” and calls and notes that your lawyer had.
Did he request the tribunal? When/how? Did you know that he was doing this and OK it? Did he advise you for or against it?
Are you saying that your real estate lawyer was representing you in employment law? Why would he recommend a tribunal if it wasn’t his area of specialty?
7.5 weeks for less than 2 years in the job?
Why would you buy a house when you’ve been working for less than 2 years. Ain’t no way you thought that’d be a good idea
Why would you lawyer up? People are way too dramatic over job losses. After you pay fees to the employment lawyers you’re probably left with less money than original lol
this brings to mind the classic line from “Wall Street”
bulls make money
bears make money
pigs get slaughtered
