Even from personal experience, I’ve submitted resumes formatted one way to a few companies that got me interviews and resumes formatted other ways that got me interviews. Same with resume reviews—people suggest one way and others suggest the complete opposite.
There are just a few key things to follow with resumes, and beyond that, you gotta follow your own instinct and process because everyone will have their own opinion about it.

Yes, they are being immature, and the only reason you didn’t see it before, if that they were getting a sweet deal out of your labor.
**Lesson 1**: Yeah, there are people like that on the planet — seemingly more today than in the past.
**Lesson 2**: Keep a close eye on your career interests, because most other people will be looking out for their own interests — often at your expense, unfortunately.
**Lesson 3**: Don’t become that guy. Remember how it felt to not only be taken advantage of, but to be essentially punished for getting yourself in a better position. Never be that guy. Remember how you felt in this experience, and figure out how to take care of your own interests, but without taking advantage of others — especially those working for you.
Congrats on your new role. This current place will be in your rear view mirror soon enough.

When they’re looking at increasing your salary, they’re looking at your pay history and how significant an increase that is.
It’s not the math part, it’s the justification part. “New hires in this role cost X amount” vs “This employee feels his work is worth a 40% increase in salary”.
It’s still dumb, but that’s the thought process that leads to those dumb decisions.

You’re fucking fine. Better than fine, actually. You got fired from a stupid job for a stupid reason. Who cares?
Do you have any idea how many of us were fired from jobs for doing stupid things in our early 20s? That’s what you’re supposed to be doing in your early 20s. Shit happens. It doesn’t matter.
When I got out of the army, I took a job doing asset protection for target. I caught an employee stealing and talked shit about him on MySpace like an idiot. Fired.
Then, I took a job working as a private investigator doing insurance investigations. The job required me to drive all over the place and only get about 4 hours of sleep a night. I fell asleep at the wheel and hit a guard rail. Fired.
Want to know what kind of effect these things had on me? None whatsoever. I’m now 39 years old, and I run the logistics for one of the largest hospitals in my state. I make great money. I joke around with my boss about all the stupid shit I got fired for in my early 20s. And he tells me stories about the stupid things he got fired for.
Stop being so paranoid and beating yourself up. You’re not a failure or a loser. You’re just a normal 24 year old doing normal 24 year old things.
Just keep looking for that career path that clicks for you and that you can tolerate… or maybe even enjoy.
Re-fucking-lax.
