Hey neighbors! πΆπ Anyone else dealing with a situation where your neighbor’s dogs are attacking your livestock? Here’s my dilemma:
– My neighbor’s huskies keep coming onto my property and harming my animals.
– I’ve tried reaching out to the police, but there’s no dog warden in my town.
– I want to ensure these dogs are controlled and not causing harm.
Do you have any advice on how to handle this situation? Maybe filing a formal complaint with the town clerk? Or seeking help from a local animal control organization? Let me know your thoughts! πΎ #LivestockProtection #CommunitySupport
I’d give the neighbor fair warning. I’d tell him the next time you see the dog attacking your animals, you will shoot it dead.
You have to be willing to follow through, though.
Reach out to your state’s Ag department and talk to someone about takings by domestic animals. They are going to be the ones that care about your animals enough to go after your neighbor–or at least direct you to resources you can assist.
So i started blasting..π
The cop is basically telling you to shoot the dog next time it is on your property without actually using those specific words. You should look into local laws on that as many places give cart blanche to kill a dog that it attacking livestock. Whether you are comfortable taking that approach is another question.
Sounds like you have a fly problem. Put a bowl of golden marlin and coke out. It will get rid of your problem.
Most places you are allowed to shoot animals harming livestock.
Shoot the fuckers and be done. Problem solved, problem staying solved.
Can you contact the officer who came by? Maybe he is actually working on it? Regardless, he’s right that it will continue to happen. Once dogs get a taste for blood like that, they don’t stop. They often become very aggressive towards people as well.Β
Β Talk to your other neighbors and ask if they’ve lost any animals or had problems with the dogs. There’s a very good chance they have. Make sure they also make police reports. You all might consider collectively confronting the neighbor. Our rural community had this issue recently and it didn’t stop until someone made a heartbreaking post on the community FB page about the dogs killing her beloved goat that she’d had since her 4H days. The dogs had killed other people’s animals too, and that was the final straw that brought everyone together to shame and pressure the owners into making amends and fixing the problem.Β
Edit: you should 100% shoot to kill if you catch the dogs in the act or on your property if you can safely do so.Β I just understand that’s often not possible because you may just find the aftermath or may not have a good safe shot.
Thus far, what have you brought to your neighbors attention. I can not tell from your post
Um hears a thought just kill the dog if it all ready has a history of attacking your livestock then kill it.
this is mot legal advice
It’s typical in the US for defending livestock to be legal justification for shooting an aggressive dog, even in many blue states. Investigate your own local laws if you consider going this route.
You can also sue the dog owner for any damage done to your property, including livestock. It’s possible that receiving lawsuits will convince the owner to take action on the dogs.
You can’t force the county or city to enforce any ordinance or law. You can only continue reporting the problem.
NAL
Farmer, not a lawyer, in my state, your neighbor’s homeowner’s insurance must pay out 3X what the dead animals are worth. Make a police report and make sure the neighbor’s insurance is notified.
It depends on where you are, but it is very likely that you would be entirely within your rights to kill the dog if it happens again. I donβt exactly want to recommend that since it feels cruel and certainly isnβt going to improve your relationship with your neighbor, but itβs unlikely the police are going to catch it in the act and while photos or video might help it sounds like that could be very slow. It would be nice if someone would actually enforce laws on this neighbor, but if they arenβt itβs up to you to determine what you can do legally to protect yourself and your property.
You didnβt give a precise jurisdiction, but a lot of areas like youβre describing allow you to use force to protect your animals from other animals. Itβd be up to you to find out the specifics and decide what youβre comfortable doing. The other solution would be to add/modify fencing to prevent these dogs from getting in, but thatβs going to be vastly more expensive and might not keep a determined animal out unless you go to extremes.Β
Start suing him in small claims court.
Getting hit with a suit for the vet bills, and cost of an adult chicken might shock him into keeping his dogs at home.
If that fails… I’m not going to say pull a South Dakota governor move, but dogs have been euthanized for that type of thing before.
Livestock > dog.
You didn’t give your location, but generally state laws let you protect your livestock (however that’s defined in your state – likely includes goats and pigs) from dogs any way you see fit.
You can also sue for damages to your livestock.
