#JobLayoffWorries #CareerConcerns #JobSecurity
Hey everyone, I could really use some advice right now. I’m currently a senior in college working as a software developer at an insurance agency, and I’m starting to worry about my job security. 🤔 After overhearing some concerning business decisions made by the agency owner, I’m not sure if I’ll be laid off soon.
Here are some red flags that have been popping up lately:
– Overheard the office’s landlord saying the owner is behind on rent
– Three sales team members were laid off, one with over a year of experience
– Paycheck is inconsistent with hours worked
– Owner has been missing for 4 months and just returned, not fully involved in projects
– Owner is reducing us to part-timers suddenly
Does anyone have any advice on what I should do in this situation? I’m feeling incredibly unsure about my future at this agency. 🤷♂️ One possible solution I’m considering is updating my resume and reaching out to my network for potential job opportunities. Any other suggestions? Let me know your thoughts!
start applying non-stop. Even if you arent getting laid off, this is an issue. My sister (non-tech) just went through something similar where her boss just stopped paying people amd then everyone found out the company was bankrupt. This is not anjob you want to stay at. Go to your career advisor, show him/her your resume, have them fix it up and apply to everything (likely a more stable company).
If you have to ask, you already knew the answer
While I would start looking elsewhere I can tell you as an agency admin that they generally are a shitshow and while this could easily be that they actually don’t have the money and are cutting you loose soon it can also just be they are a disorganized shitshow and thing swill end up returning to normal soon. I have seen both happen. Disappearing for 4 months and not being very involved in agency affairs is not really that unusual in insurance either. I have never seen anything like it before until I came into running an agency IT. If you are just part time like you said I would be looking to leave anyway.
This business is about to fail. You might not receive your last paycheck. Go full throttle on finding a new job now. As a new grad with experience you will be a nice hire.
The business is likely having severe financial issues and he’s probably trying to find a way to juggle the revenue he has to meet obligations, and failing.
You should 100% be looking for an exit, and account for every dollar he’s not paying you.
If the company is struggling on sales, and the solution is to get rid of sales… well I guess the boss can magically make the company work without sales. Time to prep for the next job.
> I’m noticing my paycheck starting to be inconsistent with my hours worked.
Payroll is (or should be) the #1 priority of any business. If they cannot pay you for hours worked, then they are circling the drain.
Definitely sounds like the business is in danger and therefore your job is as well. I’d be looking to jump asap.
Start job searching now.
The owner is bad with money if rent and paychecks are affected. Start looking hard.
For a stretch, I worked for a small satellite office of a bigger company after we were bought out. Our first hint of impending forced relocation-or-layoff was the “Office For Rent” sign outside the building.
Looks like it’s time to start applying and grinding LeetCode.
Always be interviewing
Time to abandon that sinking ship.
Missing for 4 months?
Start interviewing. I mean he is letting you leave early to do it. 🙂
