Plague Tale: Innocence and Requiem come to mind. Amazing graphics, great voice acting but rather clunky gameplay.
Mass Effect 1
Sub-bitching; Mafia shooting mechanics take away the joy of a lot of parts of any Mafia game. The way npc’s react to gunfire also breaks the immersion like a game breaking bug. But I stayed for the driving mechanics and story
I finished it after few years only thanks to nofuckinggrind mode

Maybe Alan Wake? (haven’t played the second one yet/ need a new gpu or a PS5) The gameplay isn’t terrible, but it’s fairly basic, gameplay/levels are linear. The story and writing are good and interesting though.
“Twelve Minutes” probably fits in this category!
Detroit: become human
FF16 is full of Geordies. It’s god damn fantastic.
The guardians of the galaxy game.
The gameplay was repetitive and boring. But the story and visuals were so fun, I just had to slog through
I honestly have no problem with the gameplay of Mafia 3.
But i would say Kane & Lynch series.
Guardians of the Galaxy. Great writing and genuinely funny. Contrasted with boring combat, linear levels, and crappy optimization.
Fallout: New Vegas
Although that is Bethesda’s fault, not Obsidian.
GTA!!!! Specially the old ps2 games, everything was so stiff and janky, from the shooting to the movement, I mean i guess driving was ok
OG Nier release, much less true for the remake
Wolfenstein new colossus & new order.
The gameplay is…OK…but the story and characters are great
Fallout: New Vegas. Which is why I rank it never higher than 5/10.
And the soundtrack. That was good.
I do think Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is pretty much just a puzzle game with some repetitive combat thrown in there, but damn did I enjoy every minute of its story and can’t wait for sequel.
Mafia III’s issue is mission progression, not so much core gameplay. The fact that you’re literally doing the same mission structure over and over, and each chapter just has you doing it more times than the last, becomes quite grating after a while. And it, unfortunately, gets to the point where it overshadows everything good about the game because you get horribly bored after a while.
While stealth was way too basic, imo the driving and gunplay was great in Mafia 3.
But Wolfenstein comes to mind as an example. The gameplay is mediocre, but everything else is great!
TLOU seems like an obvious answer here. I’m gonna say a more controvertial one as well – Fallout NV. The dialogue is stellar but the gunplay is… yeah, it just is
Mafia (and the remake) is one of my favourite games ever made. Mafia 2 is also very, very good. Mafia 3 I managed about 2 hours of, I just couldn’t get in to it. I have skeptical hopes for mafia 4 but I really hope they do it justice
Yakuza 0. No other series can compete with the voice acting and writing quality in this game.
Surprised noone said Spec Ops yet. I wish I can forget about it so I can play it going in blind again.
