Hey everyone! Have you ever quit a job because it was just too boring and unchallenging? I’m in a bit of a dilemma here and could use some advice. Here’s my situation:
– I have a high-paying job but I find myself with a lot of free time because the work isn’t very challenging
– I’m spending my downtime learning new skills and scrolling through TikTok
– I feel stressed during weekly update meetings because I don’t have much to report
– My boss is laid back and I enjoy the work environment, but I crave more tech work and challenges
So, what should I do? Should I start looking for a new job or stick it out until things pick up? Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated! 🤔
Possible Solution:
– Have a conversation with your boss about taking on more challenging tech projects, or possibly transitioning to a role that better aligns with your skills and interests.
This is also a city job so it’s very hard to get fired, and it has great benefits
Use the time to upskill/acquire certs
I’ve interviewed at a university after working in the private sector for a decade.. it seemed so mundane and truly boring I didn’t accept it. That said, im not sure you can go back to the private sector after working for a city/university – im not sure how you’d keep up. Don’t quit, enjoy your free time and get some hobbies
Just chill bro. Those are the kinds of jobs you don’t want to leave. Literally, if absolutely nothing else, read a book or listen to an album.
Try to be busy but enjoy it now. Usually new system updates and implementations have their growing pains.
Yes I did. But also because the pay wasn’t that great. Had it paid better I would still be there. But I looked for something similar that paid better. So, now I’m in a boring job that pays better. Sadly, I can’t really get away with doing nothing because there is always a bit of a microscope on you here. Culture really sucks. So, I continue to look for something more exciting.
stay there and just document items you wish u had access to and request it from your manager if he says NO. then you know he is aware your not doing much and he is OK with it.
I would attempt to ask for more work/access to see what they say. so I wont look like a slacker, but enjoy it.
Bro in this climate study. Learn more about the systems you’ll be working with and stay. I just left at $60k job and I’m about to get a $55k if I’m lucky. Don’t leave.
You’re getting paid and you have a job. If you find a new job put your 2 weeks in and have the new start date right away.
>70k for watching Tiktok?
Couple weeks ago, yeah.
I guarantee that there are a minimum of 10,000 people who would love to have your “boring job”
You have no idea what you have. You got it good and you’re complaining?
Take your spare time and get certs and if you didn’t finish your degree, start working on that.
And don’t use tiktok – major cybersecurity issues. Your IT department is likely to spot that and you could get fired.
I left my first NOC job somewhat because of this. It was 3rd shift, a super stable environment, I got bored of studying, got bored of playing video games, and got bored of watching Netflix. Literally had to come into an office, sit there, leave after 10 hours, often only had 1 hour of interaction with 1st and 2nd shift total. There was no training budget, no travel, no job shadowing, nothing.
A classmate poached me for a Engineering role that paid 60% more and I would have been a fool to say no. The only reason he knew I was looking was because the job was so unfulfilling that I hit up my network to find something else.
Yes I was driven almost insane by a job where I had a shit ton of menial work. I literally just images laptops and desktops en mass every day for 8 hours. It was soul draining. There was very little variety, all I did was boot laptops and sometimes desktops into BIOS and then PXE them into MDM and it was the same for every single machine. It was awful, it was not difficult at all but it took a lot of time and attention to image all the machines I had to image. Worst job I ever had. One day I just stopped going in because I was done pressing F2 all the godforsaken day. I got $24.50/hr for that.
Never have.
I’d rather be bored than constantly being overwhelmed and overworked.
In a case like this, I would try to find repetitive tasks that could be automated with Python or PowerShell and work on automating them.
Maybe work on a browser extension to optimize workflow or maybe even code a bot for slack or Microsoft teams that does something useful. Stuff like that.
