Hey Guys! 👋
Just hit a $51,258/pm milestone with no degree in Cyber as an immigrant from South Africa. Pretty wild, right? I thought I’d do an AMA to help anyone out there who might be feeling stuck in their career or needs some guidance!
Here are a few key takeaways from my journey that might help you too:
- Never turn down something that you are afraid of.
- The game isn’t played with machines, it’s played with people.
- Your most important skills are adaptability, critical thinking, and effective communication.
So, if you’re looking for some clarity or just want to chat about your career path, shoot me your questions! Let’s help each other grow and succeed. 🚀
What do you actually do as a Consultant that charges 50k a month? Do you do any technical work?
Big congrats on your achievements. Were you ever lost along the way? not sure of what part of Cyber you want to speicalise in or where to go from your present position? If so, how did you know what it was you wanted to do? Trial and error of different things until you fund something that worked for you? Im in my first CyberSec job as an analyst and kind of struggling to decide what part I want to continue down it/speicalise in.
Congrats.
Thank you for the insight for your journey. Currently making plans to get certs and find a way out of South Africa as well, not much prospect here as other places.
Thanks for the encouragement fellow SA man.
This is solid advise. Thank you!
Very nice write up
Is it to early for me to start if I only have 2 years of experience?
Interesting thread – so you are essentially reaching out advertising splunk services specifically? How do you reach decision makers/scrape data for people to contact?
To me the hardest thing would be finding clients and closing them. I’ve got a ton of business experience but don’t know how to translate my cyber sec/project management skills into my own thing.
“It can be done overnight as soon as you are ready to pull the trigger”
I’m very interested in doing consulting but I’m pretty early (<2YOE, AS degree, no certs) on in my career doing Net. Tech and junior sysadmin tasks. I take on all of the responsibilities that I can possibly handle and it has made my knowledge skyrocket. However I don’t know if I’ll ever be “ready” to take that leap. But I feel based on the info you put in that we have similar mindsets so this is definitely motivating to see.
Where were you at proficiency-wise when you decided to take this leap? How did you land your first client? Did you have liability insurance when you started? How are you staying current with your skill set? How were you able to develop your sales skills?
