Hey everyone, I need some advice on a situation with my landlord that’s been causing me some stress. 🏠💡
So, my lease states that my landlord pays for water, which is totally fine. However, I recently discovered that a large water feature at the daycare she owns next door is actually running off my electricity. This has caused a significant spike in my electrical bill, costing me over $200 extra in just a few weeks. 😳
I confronted my landlord about it, but instead of resolving the issue, she threatened to make me pay for the water bill in retaliation. I’m at a loss for what to do next. Can I take legal action or report this to the city without fear of being evicted? Or should I just bite the bullet and deal with the extra costs? 🤔
Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated. I really want to find a solution to this issue before it escalates further. Thank you in advance for your help! 🙏
That is likely a code violation and you can report it to code compliance in your area.
If the lease does not state that water is part of your rent, she can make you pay for it and likely pay any previous amount.
You are likely paying more for the electric than you would for water.
Flip the switch and turn off the water feature in addition to the other things you’re doing.
What city/state?
You didn’t mention a location which is very important in legal matters.
If you’re in the United States then the landlord probably can’t evict you over this. However, she is free to not renew your lease after it ends.
