Hey there, fellow office dwellers! 👋 Quick question for you all: Are there certain things you see people putting on their desks at work that you would recommend removing?
Here are a few common items that often grace our workspaces – what’s your take on them?
– Pictures of family members 📸
– Company awards 🏆
– A degree paper 🎓
– Some extra clutter in general 📦
– Toys/games/plushies 🎮
Do you think these items make a difference in your productivity and overall work environment? Or are they just harmless decorations?
I personally think it’s important to keep your desk clutter-free to improve focus and efficiency. Consider swapping out the toys/games for something more work-related, and perhaps create a designated space for personal items like family photos. What do you think? Let’s chat! 💬
That list seems fine. Remove any old food!
I don’t think it matters! We spend so much of our waking hours at work that we may as well try to make the space we work in feel more comfortable and homey. I definitely don’t think it’s unprofessional or anything.
Just keep bottles of scotch or other distilled spirits off of your desk
I have multiple things, fish tanks, toys, pictures, jokes, clutter, radio playing. Establish your worth and be left alone
Candy! Supposedly, it’s inviting, but seems gross.
As I look up, I see photos of the family on the wall, a few company awards (including some pretty cool looking ones from a previous job, and a company chili cooking contest one, a military retirement, plants, and a bit of clutter.
I would keep those things that make you happy.
Their feet.
Our sales team seem to think they are extras from The wolf of wall street.
Muppets
I always had a rule that I wouldn’t have anything personal on my desk. If escorted out, I shouldn’t even need a cardboard box.
Pictures of your family?? If you love someone, you will remember what they look like. 😤
Depends on your company’s vibe and culture. Look around and see what’s on other peoples’ desks for examples.
I literally keep nothing personal except my keys / wallet / phone on my desk.
Toys and plushies should be minimized, I don’t think they are very professional. One Funko or desk toy is one thing, but my coworker has 11 Disney toys in her cubby and it just looks like a tween’s bedroom.
We don’t work with children, we don’t manufacture toys, and we aren’t owned by Disney.
I get compliments on my golden girl magnets and my “New Jersey: We don’t like you either” sticker (nod to my company moving from NYC to NJ) all the time. And where the else am I going to display my work awards?!
Kids pictures with their school or some identifiable information. Don’t risk giving stalkers info on your kids.
Why do you care what’s on my desk? It’s my desk. Go police your own desk
>5. Toys/games/plushies
this one is definitely a *it depends on the job*
other stuff is fine, I don’t think matters as a whole you do wanna try and keep things professional / neutral depending on your job, lawyers / consultants etc probably not.
But, that being said if your say a consultant for intellectual property specializing in children’s toys? sure.
Regular office job doing spreadsheets and phone sales? do w.e.
One of my coworkers has a large collection of stuffed animals at their cube.
My advice to everyone is to make sure you have no more stuff than you can fit into one file box.
I’ve always been of two minds. Like another poster, at some places, I only had things I was willing to walk away from. If told to leave wouldn’t even need a box. On the other hand, I spend a large chunk of my life there. Where I’m at now, I’m not terribly worried about being told to leave abruptly. So, I have reasonably professional things that make me happy. A plant. Flower wall decals. My diplomas. Context is driving factor. Not just what everyone else might have, but how comfortable you feel in the environment.
I put nothing personal on my desk. The only thing I have ever brought into work that was personal was a Keurig (I gave it to the employees when I left) and a good phone charger.
all of those are fine.
I would remove all of those.
5 is kinda mixed. If its part of your personality, isn’t anime, and is work appropriate (not anime), its not bad to have funko or bobblehead or two
You can keep anything you want on your desk. It’s your choice.
If you happen to have a rose from valentines day, remove it and the black water in the vase. Oddly specific, but saw this today and was grossed out.
I’m actually probably the guilty one… sometimes I forget to clean my coffee cup until the next day. 😅 that’s my embarrassing desk trait
We had a guy get terminated for having a troll doll beenie baby with his own name on it hanging by a USB cable tied around the neck in a noose.
