### Which game gave you a new phobia?
Hey there, fellow gamers! 🎮 Have you ever had a spine-chilling experience while playing a video game that left you with a new phobia? Let’s dive into some spooky virtual worlds where fear lurked around every pixel!
Silent Hill 2: The fear of dark and eerie atmospheres
Silent Hill 2 is a masterpiece in horror gaming, known for its creepy environments and psychological terror. The foggy streets of Silent Hill can induce a fear of the unknown, making you paranoid about what might be hiding in the shadows.
– Example: The iconic Pyramid Head lurking in the mist, ready to strike at any moment, can instill a fear of the dark and eerie environments in players.
Resident Evil 7: The fear of confined spaces and jumpscares
Resident Evil 7 plunges players into a claustrophobic world filled with grotesque monsters and terrifying jump scares. The tight corridors and dimly lit rooms can trigger a fear of confined spaces, making you hesitant to explore every nook and cranny.
– Example: The Baker family’s farmhouse is a nightmare-inducing setting, combining jump scares with intense psychological horror to create a phobia of enclosed spaces.
Outlast: The fear of helplessness and survival
Outlast puts you in the shoes of a journalist trapped in an asylum filled with deranged inmates and supernatural horrors. The game’s emphasis on stealth and hiding from enemies can cultivate a fear of helplessness and the struggle for survival.
– Example: The feeling of being defenseless against the monstrous entities in Outlast can leave you with a newfound fear of vulnerability and the unknown.

Outlast for me. I didn’t realize how much I hated the feeling of being chased and hearing footsteps directly behind you.
Kinda the opposite for me. I’m not really scared of many things, if anything, but the deep sea was always somewhat innate. I was uncomfortable going beyond shallows in subnautica for a long time, but as I did, I found it becoming less stressful, it was like immersion therapy.
The deep ocean still freaks me out, but I could swim through it now (and have).
When I think of enclosed spaces, including caves, mines and the like, I think of Tomb Raider. Having to crawl through a narrow gap with a lit torch while something was chewing on Lara’s ankles bothered me to a whole new degree. And having a fixed camera breathing down her neck didn’t help relieve stress either. But, unfortunately, Tomb Raider was full of such moments.
This game definitely increased my claustrophobia.
Fortnite, now im terrified of battlepasses.
I played subnautica not long after getting into scuba. The fear of drowning just compounded in my brain so bad that I couldn’t play the game. The game didn’t make me afraid of diving, diving made me afraid of the game.
Turns out I had my brightness settings way down. That helped a lot. I’ve played though Subnautica 3 times now, and love diving.
Doki Doki Literature Club. Before I used to think Anime School Girls were cute, now my pp scared and confused 🙁
Resident Evils, those stalking bosses. Whenever someone is following/behind me walking at pace, it gives me a little anxiety.
Skyrim. Spiders.
Dead Space didn’t give me a phobia of elevators, but it did give me a habit of standing in a corner when I got on one.
This is a weird one. In Call of Duty: Finest Hour for PS2, there’s an Easter egg where if you get out of one of the maps in a level, there’s a giant apple sitting in a field. And at first, me and my brother were driving out to it and I thought it was cool. But the closer I got to it, the more uncomfortable I became. To the point that I had to start breathing deeply and look at the ground in front of my chair to calm down.
And that’s how I realized I have terrible megalophobia. More recent video game trigger was Adamantoise in FF15.
Jedi Fallen Order, those damn spiders on kashyyyk scared the shit outta me
I had only read the subject line and instantly thought “Subnautica”.
I don’t know if it was a new phobia or if I already had it and the game made me realize it but I wanted to see how far out in the ocean you could go in GTA 5 before something stopped you (this was when the game first came out)
So I hopped on a jet ski and headed out.
Everything was going fine, I’d periodically check the map and see how far I was, and I was curious to see what happened.
Well, what happens (or at least back then what happened) is your jet ski dies and slowly sinks into the water.
I froze and my heart started racing
Then red dots (enemies) appear on the mini map.
I panicked, and started frantically trying to swim back to shore
Then a shark came up from below and took a bite out of my character and I literally screamed. I’m not a screamer. When I’m scared or startled, I may make a quiet *hnng* type noise but I’m usually silent. But when that shark popped up I *screamed*.
My bf had to take the controller until I could regain my composure and that’s how I learned I have thalassophobia.
Subnautica and Outer Wilds both taught me about thalassophobia
Dark Souls series
Phobia: cliffs that look safe but have a hidden enemy
Maybe not fully, but arachnophobia because of the mutated spiders in the metro series. Worst is that they’re present in every damn game, even twice in Exodus
Baldur’s Gate 3 has made me develop a phobia of missing out on stuff, I’m perpetually petrified 😔
Welcome to the world of thalassophobia 😊
Thalasophobia gace me… Thalasophobia
Resident evil 7 and all fungus
Uncharted 3 gave me emulator-phobia. I’m never emulating the PS3 ever again.
Mw2 (original) the sweaty little kids who spawn kill u and have like 200000000 hours
Elden Ring made me realize that I actually don’t hate spiders, but scaled up insects and animals in general, like ants and lobsters.
For me it’s the opposite, playing a lot of goory and violent games got rid of all my phobias
SOMA has a scene that the most vocal reaction I’ve heard is I didn’t know I was afraid of that before but I’m absolutely afraid of it now
Twitter gave me transphobia
Anything attacking you in water in Morrowind, the music, the crunching noise, just gives me goosebumps
Its either the (new-ish) Tomb Raider games or Subnautica that give me a slight fear of drowning whenever I think of these games.
Outer Wilds.
Space.
