Did you know that during the Nazi Occupation of France, Coco Chanel tried to cheat her Jewish cofounders, brothers Pierre and Paul, out of their stake in the company? 😱 It’s a shocking part of history that many people are not aware of. But the brothers were not outsmarted by Coco – they were one step ahead and managed to transfer their shares to a Christian friend who later returned them to the brothers after the war. Here’s the full story behind this little-known saga.
During the 1940s, the fashion industry in France was reeling from the effects of the Nazi Occupation. Many designers and fashion houses were faced with difficult decisions about how to navigate the turbulent political landscape. Coco Chanel, the legendary fashion designer, was no exception. Despite her reputation as a trailblazer in the fashion world, her actions during this time cast a shadow over her legacy.
Coco Chanel was the co-founder of the iconic fashion house that bore her name, along with the brothers Pierre and Paul. However, when the Nazis took control of France, Coco saw an opportunity to seize control of the company and push out her Jewish partners. It’s a grim part of her history that is often overlooked in discussions of her career and influence.
But the brothers were not to be outsmarted. They anticipated Coco’s betrayal and took steps to protect their stake in the company. It’s a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness of the Jewish community during a dark chapter in history.

She was a huge piece of shit.
she was also a huge nazi supporter / spy. she would have been executed after the war except she black mailed Churchill to intervein or she would out all of the royals / higher ups she knew were nazi supporters.
“Its nothing personal, it’s just business”
“Now tell me, what did Sean Connery do again?”
Coco the cunt.
Has a certain ring to it.
Yeah, Chanel was a raving antisemite even by the standards of the time. She spied for the Nazis, too.
FUCK Coco Chanel
don’t ask what Hugo Boss was up to during the 1930’s
It drives me up a wall that in children’s books about famous historical women, there is a decent chance this Nazi sympathizer will show up. I mean, I know there are issues with many historical figures, but there must be other famous women in fashion, female entrepreneurs, etc. we can look to other than Coco Chanel. Seriously, she shows up in a lot of them.
One of the comments to that linked article reads…
« Knew about Chanel, did not know about Hugo Boss. Looked it up. Thanks for the info. Conflicted about buying Chanel, since I don’t want to support anything to do with her, but yet the company is owned by Jews. »
What does that mean? The commenter doesn’t like Nazis AND Jews?
“…Chanel’s attempt to take over the company was foiled by the Wertheimer brothers, who, before leaving Paris had passed their stake to industrialist Felix Amiot, who’d agreed to maintain it for them during the occupation to prevent it from being seized.
The company is still majority owned by the Wertheimer family — now brothers Alain and Gerard Wertheimer, who are two of the richest men on the planet, with a combined fortune estimated at $19.2 billion…”
Amiot (1894-1974) is a really interesting man who build his first plane in 1912! The brothers Wertheimer had help him financed his first business.
Let’s appreciate that Christian friend for being Christ-like and not just Christian.
I remember my senior year of HS my French teacher did a presentation on her for women’s day or something like that. Not once did he bring up the Nazi supporter bit.
She was in cahoots with Nazis?
She was also just generally a white supremacist and overt Nazi collaborator who fled France with her Nazi lover after the war to avoid prosecution. She remained in Switzerland until he died in the 1950’s and then returned to Paris to resume her fashion career as if nothing had happened.
It’s hard to tell who / what she was because she’d say or do anything to garner money, connections and power. Her friends were horrific people and by all indication she was homophobic, antisemitic, racist, daily drug user and all around opportunist to make sure she was in the right group of people. Whether those people were Nazi’s, British royalty, French Resistance, Hollywood elite, she wanted to be in the circle of fame and money.
There is a really good Behind the Bastards episode on her.
The general consensus was while her childhood was terrible, she was a massive piece of shit.
Bill Burr has a bit about this. She was sleeping with them on top of being a spy for them and generally a total piece of shit person.
So are Chanels No. 1-4 just the smells of fascism, racism, anti-semitism and Vichy France?
[Behind the Bastards did a story on her.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55V4HHWCHoI) Evil woman.
Wow.
Turns out that Bill Burr bit about her is just the tip of the iceberg. What an awful woman.
Some girls just can’t resist a man in uniform …
But seriously, kind of crazy that the brand stuck with her name.
That’s a no-no, Coco.
What a wretched human being
What’s crazier is that they anticipated her nature.
She’s also ‘responsible’ for hundreds of thousands or even millions of deaths due to skin cancer by accidentally making sunbathing fashionable. She was caught on camera after getting a tan during a cruise, and it became a trend.
Before her, being pale was seen as a sign of class (like it still is in some countries, e.g. India or Indonesia).
Kind of explains the Trump brand.
I usually see posts about Coco Chanel saying “she was doing what a woman had to do to survive nazi occupation/the war”
I like that the pendulum has swung the other way and people now accept she’s scum
She was pro-Nazi. As much as I love her clothing designs, I can’t get past her Nazi leanings. Also, in other fashion news, Hugo Boss designed the Nazi uniform coat.
Just another example of what happens if others don’t do anything and let things happen. Even if you aren’t Jewish she was a traitor to France and Churchill came to save her!! Guess he only had issues with German Nazis. They allowed her back and let her have success again and so many came to her funeral as well?! And they had to release about her work with Nazis to stop the First Lady of France from going ahead with a bigger and elaborate funeral!!? WTH??
She also supported the family of her handler for the Nazis, including paying for his funeral expenses when he died in 1952. He was the Chief of SS intelligence, the Sicherheitsdienst.
I thought Coco Chanel was a made up mascot like Ronald McDonald or the Queen of England.
What is it with fashion icons being Nazis? Chanel, Hugo Boss, Louis Vuitton. Cristobal Balenciaga was close with Spain’s Franco and was popular in Vichy France too.
I could see this happening to musk
Hey bags are overpriced and ugly ass shit
She’s also the monster who made tanning popular, phasing out the whole “pale skin is sexy” thing.
Truly a horrible person all around.
Coco was a piece of work.
Anyone who wants to learn more and what a massive shit Coco was, there’s a great ‘Behind the Bastards’ podcast episode on her.
Behind the Bastards has a really good 2-part series about her if anyone is interested in learning more!!
